The Metal Fighters (メタルファイター Metaru Faitā?) are a group that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are a series of robots serving the Eggman Empire which are built on a customizable body known as a prototype.
Description[]
As their name suggests, the Metal Fighters consist of a series of bipedal robots created by Dr. Eggman, and can be customized to resemble some of Eggman's other creations such as Metal Sonic and Metal Knuckles, as well as robotic duplicates of Miles "Tails" Prower, Amy Rose, Trip the Sungazer and NiGHTS, among other options.
History[]
Sonic Superstars[]
In Sonic Superstars, six inactive Metal Fighters were placed in Dr. Eggman's hidden workshop in Sky Temple Zone for unknown reasons. When Eggman returned to the location pursued by Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, he was defeated by the heroes, and subsequently fled, using his Egg Mobile to bring one of the Metal Fighters with him.
Eggman later dispatched the same Metal Fighter to assist him in a battle against the heroes in Cyber Station Zone. Although the heroes managed to handily defeat the Metal Fighter, Eggman responded by enlarging it into a Giant Metal Fighter, and tricking the heroes into releasing seven more regular Metal Fighters from a rigged Capsule. Despite the best efforts of Eggman's minions, however, all were ultimately destroyed by Sonic and his friends, prompting Eggman to flee once again.
Some time later, a lone Eggrobo Badnik began following in Eggman's footsteps, traveling to the same base in Sky Temple Zone and taking another Metal Fighter with him while he fled the pursuing Trip the Sungazer. The Eggrobo continued copying Eggman's movements, releasing the Metal Fighter in Cyber Station Zone, enlarging it, and deploying seven more Metal Fighters to battle Trip. However, the sungazer prevailed, and destroyed all the Metal Fighters, while the Eggrobo fled once again.
In gameplay, the Metal Fighters are featured in the game's Battle Mode, where they can complete in various mini-games. Players can use Medals that they have gathered to buy new parts. The customizations applied to the Metal Fighter by the player appear on the main Metal Fighter fought in Cyber Station Zone, although the seven smaller ones will always be unaffected.

Trivia[]
- Although Metal Fighters can be customized to resemble Metal Sonic or Metal Knuckles, it is unclear whether the actual Metal Sonic and Metal Knuckles were originally built upon Metal Fighter frameworks, or if the prototype was something created by Dr. Eggman afterwards.
