The Metal Carrier[1] (メタルキャリアー[2] Metaru Kyariā?) is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a large aircraft that was used by Metal Sonic during the Death Egg mk.II incident.

Description[]

Appearance[]

The Metal Carrier is a huge, long single-person aircraft in colors of blue, red, and white.

Features and abilities[]

The Metal Carrier has a huge amount of equipment. It can unleash Balkiries by opening its mini-hangar bays and launch plasma balls and powerful laser beams from its cannons. It can also take out a second type of cannon with a skull-like insignia on, which launches cannonballs. Needless to say, it is very fast and can keep up with the Tornado. Another feature that it has is that it can be piloted upside down or sideways, and thus launch lasers from different angles.

Weaknesses[]

The Metal Carrier, like many crafts made by Dr. Eggman, has a weak point: its cockpit. Hitting it causes great damage to the controls, and to the ship in general.

History[]

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II, Metal Sonic piloted the Metal Carrier to prevent Sonic and Tails from interfering in the Sky Fortress. The robot failed in the attempt.

Later, Metal Sonic offered a rematch to Sonic and Tails with the Metal Carrier. Still, the Metal Carrier was destroyed by the duo and the robot escaped with Dr. Eggman to the Death Egg mk.II.

The Metal Carrier is the boss of Sky Fortress Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II. It is the fourth boss in the game, and the ninth overall boss in the complete history of Sonic the Hedgehog 4. It is confronted by Sonic, with Tails piloting the Tornado to prevent the hedgehog from falling.

Boss guide[]

Act 1[]

The aircraft is first encountered in Sky Fortress Zone Act 1, where it appears several times to attack the player, during this time, Metal Sonic will send out Balkiries to attack the player. He will also shoot out round energy blasts from the aircraft. Near the end of the Act, Metal Sonic will fire several cannon balls at the player, Sonic can then damage the Metal Carrier by rebounding the cannon balls fired from the aircraft into Metal Sonic either with Sonic's Spin Jump or the Tornado's Tornado Boost Tag Action though Metal Sonic will also fire the round energy blasts in tandem with the cannon balls.

If the player hits Metal Sonic eight times during the act, the Metal Carrier will get damaged, causing the aircraft to fall and the player will finish the act afterwards. Defeating Metal Sonic this way awards the player with the "Metal Sonic Falls" achievement. Otherwise, after around six minutes has elapsed in the act, Metal Sonic will get distracted and crash into the Sky Fortress, forcing him to flee which also results in the player finishing the act.

Act 4[]

The Metal Carrier returns as the boss battle for Sky Fortress Zone Act 4. In the first phase of the battle, Metal Sonic will fly the craft ahead of the player and then slows down while firing lasers vertically at the player. The player must avoid these lasers and attack Metal Sonic by jumping on him, although he cannot be attacked if he moves underneath the Tornado. The lasers are fired in various patterns such as firing all four lasers at once or firing two lasers at the same time. Once Metal Sonic has received enough hits, he will pilot the aircraft directly in front of the Tornado and fire horizontal lasers towards the player whilst sending out Balkiries to disrupt the player's movement, the player must once again try to attack Metal Sonic whilst avoiding these obstacles. After a certain number of hits, Metal Sonic will try to flee and not attack the player. At this point though, missiles from the Sky Fortress will fire at the player; if the Tornado is hit by these, they will push the player back and if they are pushed off the edge of the screen, they will lose a life. The player must avoid these missiles and use the Tornado's Tornado Boost Tag Action to hit Metal Sonic one last time, destroying the aircraft.

After the aircraft is destroyed, Metal Sonic will jump out of the craft as it explodes and flee to the now heavily damaged Sky Fortress, which the player pursues. Then, Sonic and Tails can proceed to the Capsule and end the Zone.

Trivia[]

  • The sequence where the Tornado must dodge the Metal Carrier's lasers is similar to the final battle in Sonic Rush, where Super Sonic and Burning Blaze avoid lasers from the Egg Salamander in order to reach the boss itself.
  • This is one of the few instances in the series where Metal Sonic fights his enemies with a machine under his control, rather than fighting the opponents directly.
