<< Previous boss Shadow Generations
Mephiles
Next boss >>

Mephiles is the third and penultimate boss that appears in Shadow Generations. Here, Shadow the Hedgehog fights Mephiles the Dark, who made his debut in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).

The battle occurs in the sanctum in Dusty Desert where Shadow fought Mephiles previously. Shadow first finds the Scepter of Darkness, before it erupts and coats the floor in Corruption. Several shadows appear before Mephiles attacks, revealing himself. During the battle, Shadow reveals that he has no memory of Mephiles, as their encounters were undone when Solaris was erased. Mephiles, however, still remembers his defeat and is aware that his existence is in flux, plotting to restore himself to the timeline after getting revenge on Shadow.

Boss guide[]

First phase[]

Mephiles opens the battle by coating the floor in Corruption, then diving inside. He extends his blade vertically upwards and begins dashing around, attempting to hit Shadow with the blade. Eventually, he leaves behind a Morph Ball and retracts his blade, resembling a stingray-like shape on the floor. Shadow can now enter Doom Morph and Boost into him, which knocks Mephiles out of the floor and dispels the Corruption. From here, Shadow can attack with Chaos Snap.

Upon Chaos Snapping to Mephiles, Shadow begins to perform Doom Blast. If the player mashes the button, Shadow continually pummels Mephiles, Chaos Snapping after him as he attempts to teleport away, until he lands a final blow to knock him away. If the player holds the button at any point, Shadow aims Mephiles and can launch him at one of the purple orbs around the perimeter of the arena. Upon doing so, Mephiles smashes into the orb, then Shadow punches him into the ground for extra damage.

After taking damage once, Mephiles again coats the floor in Corruption and hides in his stingray form, this time summoning his shadows to attack. They can be easily defeated with Doom Spears, which quickly builds Shadow's Chaos Gauge. Mephiles eventually leaves another Morph Ball, allowing Shadow to enter Doom Morph and dash into him again. However, this time Mephiles can block the Doom Blast pummeling if it goes on for too long, countering with his blade and chiding Shadow for thinking he would fall for the same trick twice. The player can either dodge the attack or launch a Chaos Spear at him in order to resume performing the Doom Blast.

Second phase[]

Once his Health Gauge is reduced to half, Mephiles changes strategy by summoning seven clones of himself. He and the clones fly above the Corruption-coated arena, summoning eight columns to throw at the floor to create shockwaves. One of the columns is coated in Corruption, allowing Shadow to use a Morph Ball to enter Doom Morph and scale the side. By dashing, Shadow can launch into the air, then swing from the Morph Balls to reach Mephiles, and attack him and his clones with Chaos Snap. Defeating the clones replenishes the Chaos Gauge.

Mephiles and his clones then return to the floor, emerging in Mephiles's monstrous form to destroy the columns. He sinks into the Corruption and approaches Shadow in a giant stingray shape, before stopping to emerge underneath him. He then attacks with a giant laser and pounds the ground with both fists, but Shadow can find a Morph Ball and use Doom Morph to dash into his spine, first breaking through a barrier before connecting. Each successful hit on the monstrous form fully replenishes the Chaos Gauge. While Mephiles is in the stingray form, Shadow, with Doom Morph, can freeze him with Chaos Control and then dash into him, which also counts as a successful hit while skipping the barrier breaking sequence. After two hits, the monstrous body explodes, forcing Mephiles and his clones out.

Mephiles, creating four more clones, surrounds Shadow in a circle, preparing to attack with twelve blades simultaneously. Attack him and his clones with Chaos Snap to finish him off. By activating Chaos Control before they charge towards Shadow, Shadow can stop the attack and counter with Chaos Snap. Upon destroying five clones, Shadow punches and kicks Mephiles before setting up Doom Spears within stopped time to destroy the rest of the clones once Chaos Control ends.

Once all his health is depleted, Mephiles is kicked from behind by Shadow, falling into the Corruption on the floor. He emerges, desperately shouting that he wants to exist and sending forth his shadows. Shadow fights through them all to reach Mephiles, finishing him with a hefty punch that pins him to the floor and forces him back inside the Scepter of Darkness, leaving him sealed away again.

Hard Mode differences[]

  • Rings are completely absent from the arena.
  • Mephiles will always attempt to counter the fifth pummel of Shadow's Doom Blast regardless if he has taken damage during the beginning of the battle.
  • Less Morph Balls for Shadow to swing from during the column attack.
  • Mephiles's monstrous form requires three hits to be taken down instead of two.

Trivia[]

  • Mephiles is the only boss in the game who doesn't roar or distort the screen when his introductory title card appears.
  • Mephiles is the only boss in either Shadow Generations or Sonic Generations whose Boss Gate requires four Boss Gate Keys to open instead of three, as well as the only boss whose gate is underground in White Space. This may refer to his status as a forbidden being who is lost to time.
  • In his battle, Mephiles repeats several quotes from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). He repeats verbatim "I owe much to you, Shadow" from their meeting in Kingdom Valley. He also says "What? Did you forget about me AGAIN?", which is a reference to when he first said "What, did you forget me?" in Kingdom Valley.
    • In the Japanese script, after claiming to restore himself back into the timeline, he introduces himself with the quote "I'm Mephiles. Mephiles the Dark!".
    • "It's time to raise the curtain on this macabre play!" is a reference to the line before he merges with Iblis, where he says "It's time for the final curtain call!" (さあ カオスエメラルドよ!最後のショーの幕を上げろ! Now, Chaos Emerald, raise the curtain for our final show!?)
    • "I am disappointed, Shadow. Truly disappointed!" is another reference, as this is a direct translation of one of Mephiles' lines in the Japanese version (残念だよ、シャドウ。実に残念だぁ!).
  • In contrast with the other boss battles of Shadow Generations, Mephiles has the least original lines of dialogue, as many of them are repeated verbatism from his debut game.
  • The columns might be a reference to the Snapcube dub of Sonic '06: "Welcome to Tilted Towers."
