Mecha Sonic (メカソニック Meka Sonikku?) is the first boss of the Death Egg Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Mega Drive. It is a robot modelled after Sonic the Hedgehog.

In this appearance, Mecha Sonic is the first line of defense aboard the Death Egg, and the first boss of the Death Egg Zone. It has a sturdy form, is extremely bulky and may have been remote controlled by Doctor Robotnik, but is combat-capable and would be able to instantly shred Sonic with its saw-blade spikes. In order to defeat it, Sonic must strike it eight times while avoiding its spikes (not easy considering there are no rings in this zone unless playing an alternate difficulty in Sonic Jam). A similar silver robot was featured in the 8-bit Sonic the Hedgehog 2 game, which was released earlier than the 16-bit game.

Battle

This is probably the most difficult Sonic robot yet to defeat as there are no rings at all in the stage. A skilled player can defeat him before he finishes his second attack by following this strategy. When Mecha Sonic is first seen flying down, Spin Dash directly under the front of its head and avoid staying below its spikes facing the opposite wall (this is difficult but necessary to prevent him from using his most devestating attack - shooting spikes in mid-jump). Its first attack is always a Spin Dash, so move away and dodge after the fourth hit. Bounce on its head to hit him again (his next attack is always speeding along the ground without spinning). The player should have dealt three hits, so only one more hit should finish it. If the player's second lot of attacks dealt only two hits, wait for its to finish and then bounce on its head again to win. If Mecha Sonic is not defeated at this point, it will be significantly harder as his moves become random and he may use his spike gun overhead.

Appearances in Other Media

Versions of Mecha Sonic from the Death Egg have appeared in various other media, including Archie Comics and Sonic the Comic.

Sonic the Comic

In Sonic the Comic, Sonic and Tails return to the Death Egg some time after the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to find that Mecha Sonic is still functional. Sonic defeats it for good by kicking off its head.[1] The robot was unnamed in this continuity.

In the Archie Comics continuity, this robot is called Silver Sonic after its 8-bit counterpart. The first Silver Sonic appeared in the miniseries Sonic Quest, a loose adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. This version of Silver Sonic was much larger and slower than the version in the games, standing about ten times the size of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic defeated Silver Sonic by short-circuiting its brain circuits. He then controlled the robot from its head, using it to fight Robotnik in his Eggs-O-Skeleton armor.[2]

Naming

This robot was not named in the English-language manuals accompanying Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but in the Japanese materials he was called "Mecha Sonic" (as were the other early Sonic robots).

Because of his similarity to Silver Sonic from the Master System and Game Gear versions of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Archie Comics used the name "Silver Sonic" for the version of the character in the Sonic Quest miniseries.[3] Many fans adopted this name for the game character, particularly to differentiate it from the radically different design of Mecha Sonic seen in Sonic & Knuckles.

"Mecha Sonic" was used as the official English-language name in the backstory for Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I, released in the Story section of the official English website.[4] However, in a pre-release video of Sonic Generations, it is briefly called both "Silver Sonic" and "Mecha Sonic,"[5] although it is unknown if the speaker mistook it for its 8-bit counterpart.
