I retired from the battlefield long ago. But I suppose you children could do with a lesson in discipline and humility.

— Master Zik, Sonic the Hedgehog #26

Master Zik is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing. He is a Zeti and a member of the Deadly Six.

Appearance

Master Zik is a blue Zeti, and the smallest of the Deadly Six by far. His head and body are indistinguishable and are of a spherical shape, with small limbs. Only Master Zik's head is sky blue, while the rest of his body is black. He wears a robe that matches the color of his torso with a torn hem on his wrists and around the waist. His short black legs end with two blue claws, with a third claw on each heel. Master Zik has five fingers on each sky blue hand, each finger tipped with a blue nail.

Master Zik has wrinkles across his forehead and lips, and a long white mustache which reaches down to his feet. He has a pair of very short horns on his head, which are colored in black and yellow rings. He is largely bald sans for a long strand of white hair. Master Zik's sclera are yellow with purple irises, while he has blue eyelids and black under-eyes. Master Zik carries a wooden staff that is taller than he is, which ends in a inward swirl at the top.

History

Past

At some point in the past, a man named Dr. Eggman invaded the Lost Hex with his many Badniks. He enslaved Master Zik and the other members of the Deadly Six with an ancient relic. Soon, he was freed unwillingly by Sonic the Hedgehog and thus exacted his revenge with his team by taking control of Eggman's Badniks with their electromagnetic powers. The Deadly Six were later stopped by Sonic, relinquishing their control of the Badniks.[1]

The Last Minute

Zavok later assembled the entire team to inform them of Dr. Starline's offer to help handle Dr. Eggman's crisis on the world below and how they would immediately betray him, though Master Zik was getting annoyed by Zazz as he talked. Zeena initially showed dislike for the idea of going back to Eggman as it could very well be a trap. Zavok immediately snapped at this, saying that since they underestimated the doctor the first time, they were now well prepared. Zavok planned for them to punish Eggman for their humiliation, destroy Sonic for defeating them, and then destroy their world below. Master Zik took a liking to this plan.[2]

Some time later, Master Zik praised Zavok for his initiative on letting the Deadly Six bide their time to let their anger and hatred fester but warned that their vengeance against Sonic and Eggman must be exact. Soon, the duo were met by Starline, who told them that today's events cemented the fact that the team's help was needed. To prove that they could exert their will over machines, Zavok took control of a Moto Bug and has it drive around. Starline then told that after he made last minute preparations on his end, he would come back for the Deadly Six. After Starline left, Zik gloated as to how he was naïve and they would swiftly betray him. Zavok declared that they will use the Zombots to destroy Eggman, Sonic and the entire world below for merciless vengeance and absolute victory. Soon enough, the Deadly Six were brought onboard Eggman's Faceship via Starline's Warp Topaz.[3][4]

All or Nothing

ZikWinterburg

Master Zik controls a horde of Zombots in Winterburg, from Sonic the Hedgehog #25.

Upon seeing the Deadly Six, Eggman immediately sent Metal Sonic to attack them. Zavok swiftly used his electromagnetism to control the robot and tauntingly reminded Eggman how they were able to control robots. Following this, Starline presented the Cacophonic Conch and blew into it to try and control the Zeti. Once Zazz saw that Starline had left an opening after using the conch, he headbutted him which allowed Zeena to take the conch and give it to Zavok. With Eggman and Starline defenseless, Zavok commanded Metal Sonic to attack them; however, Starline hurriedly opened a Warp Portal that transported him, Eggman and Metal Sonic away. Noting that they were now left with the Faceship, the means to create Eggman's Metal Virus, and the fabled Chaos Emeralds, Zavok decided to remove an Emerald and place it on his chest to empower himself with it. He was met with praise for his intuition by Orbot, who claimed that he and Cubot were too spineless to turn on the Deadly Six; after Zavok commanded that the robot take them to the largest known pockets of survivors, Orbot complied but not before telling them that he will log their orders to keep them well coordinated. With this, Zavok plotted out the Deadly Six's new plan; each of them would take one Chaos Emerald to be empowered by so that they can control thousands of Zombots around the world instead of random, shambling masses. He planed to bring utter devastation to the world that Eggman and Sonic had been fighting over for so long; once every living thing had been infected and neither party had anywhere else left to run, they would give them mercy of a slow end by the Zombots themselves. Master Zik took the green Chaos Emerald and set out to Winterburg. There, he ruthlessly controlled a large horde of Zombots from a destroyed water tower that he telekinetically levitated and had them infect everything in sight. After a while, Master Zik contacted Zavok, who was still on the Faceship, and told him that the invasion was going well and he could see the virus spreading through the forests beyond, believing that the continent will be fully converted in a few days; he also wondered if there was more the leader could be doing. Zavok assured his master that he was not resting on his laurels and would see to it that they infect everything from coast to coast by that night, and by tomorrow, the world.[5]

A while later, as Master Zik was busy commanding Zombots to begin infecting different areas, he was called on by a voice; it came from Jet the Hawk, who, with the Babylon Rogues, was looking to intercept him. Master Zik quickly used his powers to take control of their Extreme Gears, forcing them to fall off onto the ground below; he then hopped on Jet's board, noting that they were impressive and stating that he may take one of them for himself. When Jet taunted Master Zik for not fighting his own battles, he made it clear to the hawk that he retired from the battlefield long ago but was prepared to teach the Babylon Rogues a lesson in discipline and humility. When the trio lunged at him, Master Zik sent Wave and Storm's board back at them. Due to this opening, Jet managed to knock the Zeti back with his Bashōsen and reclaim his board. When Jet began to gloat over him, Master Zik pointed out to him how Wave and Storm were now surrounded by a horde of Zombots. Jet furiously demanded that Master Zik let them go, only for the Zeti to taunt him for only now understanding the consequences of threatening his elders. Master Zik took glee in watching Jet try to act on his own, saying one should not sacrifice their teammates unless it benefited them and that all he had to do was say one command for Jet to lose everything. He then asked if he could beg for mercy to entertain him. Refusing to give up, Jet stated that the Babylon Rogues did not beg, give up or lose and hit Master Zik with a large gale of wind from his Bashōsen. Storm and Wave then managed to support Jet by hitting the Zeti further away, but not without grabbing the Chaos Emerald away from him first. Defeated and defenseless, Master Zik was soon grabbed by Zombots while he told Jet that he was not tactical or skillful, but lucky.[6][7]

Out of the Blue

Zik30

Master Zik leaves Winterburg, from Sonic the Hedgehog #30.

After Super Sonic and Super Silver had reversed the effects of the Metal Virus all around the world, the Zombots were no more and were cured. After retrieving his cane, Master Zik thought that the villagers of Winterburg were fools to be celebrating since they thought the threat was over. The Zeti left the village, stating that their jubilation would be their downfall. However, he first had to find Zavok to plan a counterattack, painfully admitting that the Babylon Rogues deserved earned their victory.[8]

Personality

Master Zik is a calm individual who has a no nonsense attitude towards everyone. He enjoys violence and revenge. He is very proficient in his work and always prefers it when things go according to plan. Like all of the other members of the Deadly Six, he is a malicious character that enjoys violence and does not care for the well being of anyone other than his fellow Zeti. Master Zik is also a very vengeful person and has no qualms in enslaving or destroying an entire world just to take revenge on someone that upset them, as evidenced when he and the other members of the Deadly Six tried to turn every individual on Sonic's world into Zombots with the Metal Virus just because they despised Dr. Eggman and Sonic. He is a person that hates losing.[5][1][3][7]

Powers and abilities

Master Zik has the ability to manipulate magnetic fields, which he can use to control machinery with his mind.[1] Master Zik also possesses telekinetic powers, as demonstrated when he levitated a large broken water tower (that he also stood on) to command a large horde of Zombots.[5] Though he would be considered quite old, Master Zik is quite has enhanced acrobatic skills.[6]

Weaknesses

Like all other Zeti, Master Zik's powers are greatly inhibited when the Cacophonic Conch is blown, which causes him great pain.[5]

Relationships

Deadly Six

The Deadly Six are the only people that Master Zik trusts as allies. Despite their differing personalities, they all have the same hunger for power, carnage and destruction. Above all members, Master Zik respects his pupil Zavok the most for his natural leadership and his opportunistic thinking.[2][3]
