The Marun[1] (マールン[2] Mārun?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, pillbug-based Badnik created by Dr. Eggman.

Appearance[]

Marrun

The Maruns are Badniks based on pillbugs, having a turquoise shell which they can curl up into if they detect an intruder, as well as six short and stubby legs.

Overview[]

The Maruns make their only appearance in Sonic Advance 3, where they appear exclusively in Chaos Angel. In gameplay, the Maruns wait in one spot until the player gets close, upon which they will curl into a ball and roll into them. While curled into a ball, the Maruns cannot be harmed by direct attacks, and any attempt to launch physical attacks on them will only cause the player to take damage. As such, the player must either quickly destroy a Marun before they curl into a ball or simply avoid it. Despite this, indirect attacks like the Hammer Attack or Chao Attack can still destroy a Marun even after it is curled into a ball. Like with most other Badniks in the game, the Maruns will release a Ring upon their destruction.

Trivia[]

  • The Marun's name is derived from the Japanese word maru, meaning "round."
  • The Marun's attack pattern is incredibly similar to the Dangos from Sonic the Hedgehog CD, though unlike the Dangos, the Maruns damage the player while in their ball form instead of simply bouncing them around.
