I lost so much that day. But they gave me hope, and the will to keep going. For that, I will be forever grateful.

— Lupe the Wolf, Sonic the Hedgehog #277

Lupe the Wolf[1] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. She is a mobian wolf and ally to the Freedom Fighters, as well as the leader of the Wolf Pack. After being caught up in Dr. Eggman's attack on her village when she was younger, she was inspired by the heroism of Sally Acorn to fight back against the diabolical doctor.

Appearance[]

Lupe is a tall, lilac mobian wolf that has a tail which is dark blue with a white tip, light blue eyes with two eyelashes on each side of them, and a single scar under her left eye. She also has small cheek tuffs and long-pointed ears with white canals. Her face has as well a white patch in which her large eyes and muzzle with a black nose are settled, and her dark blue hair is somewhat spiky and mohawk-like, featuring a white streak, and is bound in a braid by three golden hair bands. For attire, she wears a light blue tribal dress with a dark purple sash and a dark purple trim at the bottom that ties around the neck by a gold collar, white gloves, and dark purple sandals. Her wrists and upper arms are adorned with gold bracelets and armlets.

At some point in the past, Lupe was caught in the invasion of her village by Dr. Eggman and his forces. Thankfully, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sally Acorn and Antoine D'Coolette of the Freedom Fighters came to her aid, and their heroism, along with the pain of losing her father during the invasion, gave her the drive to fight back.[2][3]

Shattered World Crisis[]

Act Two[]

Note: From the readers point of view, this picks up from where Lupe's original history ended.

Later, during the Shattered World Crisis, the Freedom Fighters were surprised to discover that Lupe was one of the many Gaia Key Guardians.[4] In their quest to find the keys, they found Lupe in the Thunder Plains Zone along with the Wolf Pack, who were under attack from E-118 Tau. It was not until the attack was over that the heroes learned the badniks had been going after a decoy Gaia Temple that the Wolf Pack had been guarding.[3]

Later, Lupe watched Sonic and Sally's broadcast, and decided to aid them in keeping the Egg Army at bay while the Freedom Fighters restored the planet.[5] However, nothing went according to plan as Eggman had seen the broadcast and had the Battle Bird Armada attack the Freedom Fighters early.[6] After a long battle, the Freedom Fighters were able to defeat both Eggman and Dark Gaia, and Lupe watched as the world was restored.[7]

Personality[]

Lupe is a kind and sage-minded individual, but her peaceful exterior hides a real warrior. She is very intelligent, cooperative, and knows how to strategize. Her loyalty and trustworthiness makes her an excellent role model and an invaluable ally thanks to the Freedom Fighters and the impact they had on her life. Likewise, she is protective of her homeland and her people, and will fearlessly defend them if they come under attack.

Trivia[]

  • Lupe's name is derived from "lupus", the Latin name for wolf ("lupe" is the vocative singular form). It may have come via Italian, in which "lupe" is the feminine plural (i.e. meaning "she-wolves"). It could also have been derived from "Lupine," the scientific term for "wolf."
  • Lupe is the only member of the previous Wolf Pack not to have been created by former writer Ken Penders, and the only one not caught up in his legal disputes with Archie Comics and Sega. As such, only she made the transition into the post-Super Genesis Wave timeline.
  • Lupe is the only non-human Gaia Key Guardian.
