---|---|
Sonic's Edusoft (Sega Master System) |
Unreleased educational game created by Manchester-based developer Tiertex.[797] The development started without acquiring the license, as the educational Sonic the Hedgehog game aimed at 5 years olds was made in hope that Sega would pick up the production.[798] In attempt to get game released between Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Tiertex failed to gain the publisher's interest. |
SegaSonic Bros. (Arcade; Sega System C) |
Arcade puzzle game designed by Fukio “FTJ” Mitsuji, the creator of Bubble Bobble. The game was finished around late 1992, but it did not receive wide release after its failure during the location tests in Japan.[799] The unreleased arcade game then resurfaced in February 2016 and eventually become unofficially playable in the modified version of MAME in December 2018.[800][801] |
Sister Sonic (Sega CD) |
Announced in late 1992,[802] original western localization for the Sega CD version of Popful Mail was set to replace the game's whole cast with characters from Sonic the Hedgehog series. A new main character called Sister Sonic, was set to be Sonic's long lost sister.[803] After the announcement, the planned western localization received backlash from fans of the original game.[804] The localized version of the game was then shelved and replaced with direct port of the game being released later for the North American market in 23 February 1995. |
Treasure Tails (Sega Mega Drive) |
Isometric puzzle/adventure game starring Miles "Tails" Prower, that was originally pitched by Sega Technical Institute game designer Bill Dunn.[805] A single presentation featuring mockup screenshots created by Craig Stitt is known to exist.[806] |
Astropede (Sega Mega Drive) |
Planned spin-off game featuring a new main character that was intended to be part of the Sonic the Hedgehog universe. Originally having a working title SEGApede, the game was pitched by Craig Stitt in Sega Technical Institute circa 1994 before the production was then shelved due the lack of resources.[807] Notably, the prototype footage shown during the pitch, features recycled art assets of Hidden Palace Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2.[808] |
SegaSonic Cotton Candy Scramble[809] (Arcade) |
Arcade vending machine with interactive Sonic-themed game, providing cotton candy in similar manner to SegaSonic Popcorn Shop. One arcade cabinet was known to be presented during the Japanese Amusement Machine Show 1994[810] and it has been listed in the Sega 1994 Amusement Machine Guide book.[809] Patent documents of the arcade cabinet have also been available online.[811] |
Sonic Sports (Sega 32X) |
March 1995 issue of the monthly gaming magazine Game Players mentions one of upcoming games for the Sega 32X being title called Sonic Sports. Set to resemble ACME All-Stars, the game was stated to feature multiple Sega characters such as Sonic, Tails and Ristar, playing different sports, including basketball, volleyball and soccer.[812] Anything else about the game has not been heard since. |
Sonic X-treme (Sega Saturn) |
Unreleased mainline Sonic the Hedgehog title set to be released for Sega Saturn prior to its cancellation in the mid-1990s. Developed by the western division of Sega Technical Institute and Point of View after the success of Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic X-treme was planned as the first 3D platformer game in the series with Sega of America attempting to get the game released for the Christmas 1996 season. Because of the game's constant, troubled development, the game was canceled and the Sega Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast was released for the console in late 1996. Between 1993 and 1997, Sonic X-treme had also couple of productions and pitches connected to the game's development, each one of them providing different approaches to the game's story and gameplay mechanics. For these canceled games, see Sonic-16, Untitled STI Sonic game and Sonic Mars. |
Sonic Saturn (Sega Saturn) |
Different project developed by Peter Morawiec and Adrian Stephens[813] at a separate branch of Sega Technical Institute alongside Sonic X-treme in early 1996. The game's world was set to be more realistic compared to Sonic X-Treme. Special Stages in the game were also designed to be separate minigame of pool on 3D environments, separately called Sonic Pool before the game was quickly canceled.[814] |
Sonic X: Chaos Emerald Chaos (Game Boy Advance) |
The second GBA Video Game Pak release scheduled to be released after the release of Sonic X: A Super Sonic Hero. It was set to feature Sonic X episodes Missile Wrist Rampage and Chaos Emerald Chaos. For unknown reasons, the distributor Majesco Entertainment never released the GBA Video Pak and details of the supposed release are still found in numerous websites after its cancellation.[815][816][817][818][819] |
Sonic DS (Nintendo DS) |
Also referred to as Sonic E3 Demo, short tech demo was playable in E3 2004 around the same time when Nintendo DS was revealed to the public. The limited gameplay of the demo involves using the stylus on the touch screen to make a Sonic accelerate his running speed on a linear route.[820][821] The demo was not seen after the trade event and Sonic Rush became the first proper Sonic title to be released for the Nintendo DS. |
Sonic the Hedgehog Extreme (Xbox) |
Unreleased skateboarding game developed by Vision Scape Interactive, that was proposed to Sega around 2000s. The only known prototype build that exists shares art assets with other VisionScape games such as unreleased Tech Deck: Bare Knuckle Grind and Rocket Power: Zero Gravity Zone. Featuring Sonic and Shadow as playable characters, the game also included three different modes: Mission, Combat and Race.[822][823] A prototype build was discovered in 20 April 2011 and became unofficially playable in 24 July 2016.[824][825] |
Sonic the Hedgehog: Awakening | Unreleased game in development around late 2000s. The only known evidence of the project's existence is the game being listed in Pete Capella's resume, who voiced Silver the Hedgehog at the time.[826] |
Sonic Central (iOS, Android) |
Unreleased, free application for iOS and Android mobile devices. Despite its announcement in 9 June 2015 and scheduled release,[827] the application has never been mentioned since. |
Sonic Demo (iOS, Android) |
In 22 December 2021,[828] the game studio Nitrome's Twitter account revealed a prototype demo featuring Sonic the Hedgehog in a vertical platforming game with wall running and Wall Jump mechanics.[829] The studio pitched the game for Sega at some point and did not receive appeal afterwards.[830] Core gameplay elements including wall-running mechanic, are featured in Nitrome's mobile game Super Leap Day released in 6 August 2021. |

Sonic the Hedgehog (Commodore Amiga, Commodore 64, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum) |
In the United Kingdom, the U.S. Gold retained the rights to Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit) soon after the game's release in order to develop a port of the game for multiple home computer formats.[831][832][833] Despite the announcment however, no release dates were given and the home computer ports were never released. The only publications to possess coverage of a supposed Amiga port was in the September 1991 issue of the Italian magazine The Games Machine and a advertisement in Spanish magazine Super Juegos from 1992.[834][835] |
Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega CD) |
Presented at the Summer CES 1992 in Chicago, which featured footage from the original Sega Mega Drive game. The game was set to be released as the Sega CD port of Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit), with extra high quality music added to it.[836] Nothing has been reported about the port since then, and Sonic the Hedgehog CD ended up being released for the Sega CD in 1993. |
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 CD (Sega CD) |
Also referred to as "Super Sonic"[837] and subtitled as "Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Escape from Ring Zone"[838] in magazine articles, the Sega CD port of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was rumored to be the fourth, enhanced version of the game, which was set to be released in 1993. Due the marginal success of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in Japan, the Mega CD port was originally postponed[839] before being completely dropped in favor of Sonic the Hedgehog CD. No images of the port has surfaced and many publications have mistakenly assumed that the demo footage of Sega Multimedia Studio that was seen at the Summer CES 1992 to be related to the Sega CD port of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.[840][841] |
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Limited Edition (Sega Mega Drive) |
Also known as Sonic 3 + in the leaked Sonic Mars script, the game was developed as a compilation of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, with two games contained in a single cartridge. Few publications stated this combined, deluxe version of the two games being an addition of three different releases: Sonic 3 Part I, Sonic 3 Part II and Sonic 3 Limited edition with the 24MBit cartidge.[842][843] The Limited Edition was shelved, with Sonic & Knuckles being released in fall 1994. |
Sonic Riders (Game Boy Advance) |
A handheld port of the 2006 racing game that was set to be developed by Backbone Entertainment with a Out Run-style game engine.[844] A tightly scheduled development of the port was canceled by Sega of America after Sega of Japan requested that the team created a completely 3D racing game.[844] |
Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) (PC, Wii) |
Originally, there were additional plans to release Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) for the PC and Wii. The PC DVD-ROM version was mentioned in printed ads featured on the back cover of the Sonic Riders instruction booklet and on the game's E3 2006 flyer. However, the development of the Wii version soon after shifted and the work would focus on the original game Sonic and the Secret Rings in the middle of the game's development. This was due the lengthy development time and the conceived plans to create an original title that would use the full capabilities of the Wii Remote.[845] The PC version was eventually canceled as well, likely due the game's critical reception. |
Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II (Windows Phone) |
Originally set to be released in July 2012 for the Windows Phone according to trailers and media articles.[194][846][847][848] However, this version of the game was never made available for the Xbox Live service for unknown reasons.[849][850][851] |
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles (iOS, Android) |
Following the re-releases of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the iOS and Android platforms, Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley were set to develop the remastered edition of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. A concept video was released that showcased a prototype of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for smartphone devices. However, circumstances have prevented the development from proceeding any further.[852] |
Sonic Mania (Nintendo 3DS) |
Right after the announcement of Sonic Mania, the developer Renegade Kid offered to port the game over to the Nintendo 3DS.[853] However, the port was shelved as Renegade Kid announced, in 29 August 2016, that the studio would be closed and split into two separate companies: Atooi & Infitizmo.[854] |
