Floating Ferrons block the only escape routes through Dr. Robotnik's lava-powered generators. Use the steam jets like flippers. Get help from the Cluckbirds to get to higher places.

Destroy Dr. Robotnik's half-baked bosses in the Robo-Boiler Room!

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball US instruction manual.[1]

Lava Powerhouse is the second level of Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball and Sonic Spinball (8-bit). As with other levels in this game, Sonic must bounce through the pinball-like level, acquiring Chaos Emeralds which are in turn used to access the boss. In this stage, there are three to find.

Description

Lava Powerhouse is a geothermal energy plant, fueling the robotizing factories (where Animals are turned into power sources for Badniks) of the Veg-O-Fortress' higher levels by tapping the magma flowing through the core of Mount Mobius. Steam-driven pistons and pressure dials abound, in addition to giant bellows crewed by Hip and Hop.

Story

Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball

In Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball, Sonic the Hedgehog arrived in the Lava Powerhouse after exiting the Toxic Caves. There, he obtained the Chaos Emeralds that kept the volcanic activity in the area stable, before facing the Roboheads inside the Roboiler. After destroying them, Sonic proceeded to The Machine.

Sonic Spinball (8-bit)

In Sonic Spinball (8-bit), Sonic the Hedgehog arrived in the Lava Powerhouse after exiting the Toxic Pools. There, he obtained the Chaos Emeralds that kept the volcanic activity in the area stable. After that, destroyed the Roboheads inside the Roboiler and continued onward to The Machine.

Gameplay

This is the first of two levels in Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball where the player can score lots of points by earning a score multiplier - this is done by lighting a series of gates that are found at the tops of the bottom rooms of the level. When a gate has been passed through, the light above it turns yellow, and lighting all three increases the multiplier by one (so for example, doing this once doubles all scoring, twice triples it, and so on). Showdown is the other level in which this can be done.

Overview

Boss

Main article: Roboiler

The Roboiler, the boss of Lava Powerhouse.

The boss of the Lava Powerhouse is the Roboiler, a boiler containing Roboheads. Each head can move to one of five locations inside the boiler. Sonic has to destroy all the Roboheads inside the boiler by jumping into the Roboiler and rattling about. However, whenever one gets taken out, the remaining heads will temporarily vanish, leaving Sonic to tumble out of the Roboiler and make his way back up. Each head takes five hits to be destroyed.
