Destroy Dr. Robotnik's half-baked bosses in the Robo-Boiler Room!

— Description, Sonic Spinball United States instruction manual.[1]

Lava Powerhouse (ラバパワーハウス[2] Raba Pawāhausu?) is the second level in the the 16-bit version and 8-bit version of Sonic Spinball. It is the second lowest point of the Veg-O-Fortress, where the power generators for the fortress are found. Three Chaos Emeralds have to be found to defeat the boss and advance.

Description[]

Lava Powerhouse is a geothermal energy plant, fueling the Veg-O-Fortress' higher levels by tapping the magma flowing through the core of Mount Mobius. Steam-driven pistons and pressure dials abound, in addition to giant bellows crewed by Hip and Hop.

Story[]

Sonic the Hedgehog arrives in the Lava Powerhouse after exiting the Toxic Caves/Pools. There, he obtains the Chaos Emeralds that keep the volcanic activity in the area stable, before facing the Roboheads inside the Roboiler. After destroying them, Sonic proceeds to The Machine.

Gameplay[]

This is the first of two levels in the 16-bit version of Sonic Spinball where the player can score lots of points by earning a score multiplier - this is done by lighting a series of gates that are found at the tops of the bottom rooms of the level. When a gate has been passed through, the light above it turns yellow, and lighting all three increases the multiplier by one (so for example, doing this once doubles all scoring, twice triples it, and so on). Showdown is the other level in which this can be done.

Overview[]

When Sonic enters the Lava Powerhouse, he is launched into the Pressure Loop on the left bottom table. To reach the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic needs to first reach the Steam Arena between the tables, and use the Clucks that appear to bounce into the pressure cannon to launch him to the upper Steam Arena and tables, where he then needs to hit the cork in the Pressure Loop in either table to get access to the shaft leading to one of the Emeralds, using the steam dischargers to push him up the shaft to reach the Emeralds.

Once all three are collected, Sonic can use the upper Steam Arena to get access to the Roboiler's boss table, using the Clucks to bounce into the pressure cannons to enter the boss table.

The Roboiler, the boss of Lava Powerhouse, from the 16-bit version of Sonic Spinball.

The boss of the Lava Powerhouse is the Roboiler, a boiler containing Roboheads. Each head can move to one of five locations inside the boiler. Sonic has to destroy all the Roboheads inside the boiler by jumping into the Roboiler and rattling about. However, whenever one gets taken out, the remaining heads will temporarily vanish, leaving Sonic to tumble out of the Roboiler and make his way back up. Each head takes five hits to be destroyed.
