The Land of Darkness (闇の大地 Yami no Daichi?) is a location that appears in Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie. It is the surface of Planet Freedom, located directly below the Land of the Sky. It is best known for being the home of Dr. Robotnik.
Description[]
The Land of Darkness is a dark region on Planet Freedom. Dark gray clouds and floating continents cover most of the sky, preventing most of the sunlight from reaching the area. Despite its rather creepy and gloomy appearance, the region is verdant and clean, though it is a bit rugged with ridges and mountains and is littered with floating islands, lakes and deadly booby-traps and killer robots designed by Dr. Robotnik. Many ruins can also be seen in the Land of Darkness, in addition to real-world modern cities and Robotnik's home city, Robotropolis.
The Land of Darkness can be accessed in two ways: by a whirlwind-like "portal" in the Land of the Sky, or by chancing into a Warp Zone, an extradimensional link between two locations.
History[]
Past[]
For a long time, the people of Planet Freedom lived in the Land of Darkness, though an incident caused them to leave the planet's surface and move to the Land of the Sky. Years later, Dr. Robotnik would establish the city of Robotropolis in the Land of Darkness.[citation needed]

Archie Comics[]
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the Land of Darkness was a region on Planet Freedom which was formed after Chaos Knuckles altered reality. However, its existence was short-lived, as history would return to normal shortly after the Land of Darkness's creation.
Trivia[]
- In the Land of Darkness, a building very similar to the Empire State Building can be seen. This suggests that the ruined city may be intended to be New York City, which would make Planet Freedom Earth.
