— Description, Sonic Labyrinth[1]

Labyrinth of the Sea (海のラビリンス[2] Umi no Rabirinsu?) is the second Zone in Sonic Labyrinth. Like other Zones in Sonic Labyrinth, the Labyrinth of the Sea consists of four acts, with the three first being standard Zones while the fourth one is devoted to the local boss.

Description[]

The Labyrinth of the Sea is an underwater-themed area. This is apparent as starfish, seaweed, and rocks can be found on the floor outside the walking area. The color scheme of the background is light blue in the first Zone, orange in the second Zone, dark blue in the third Zone, and light blue again in the fourth Zone.

Story[]

Continuing further into the Super Labyrinth to recover the Chaos Emeralds, which are the only things that can remove the Slow Down Boots that are currently attached on his feet and taking away his super speed and agility, Sonic arrives in the Labyrinth of the Sea with only his Spin Dash technique to aid him. Despite being crippled, Sonic manages to make it to the end of the labyrinth where he confronts the Kani Pearl and destroys it. As the orange Chaos Emerald is dropped on the ground, Sonic seizes the Emerald and advances towards the next part of the Super Labyrinth with his Spin Dash.

Gameplay[]

Like with all the Zones in Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic's objective in the majority of the Zones in the Labyrinth of the Sea is to collect three Keys and bring them to the goal within a certain time limit in order to advance to the next Zone.

Although the level is set underwater, the gameplay is not significantly changed: Sonic moves the same speed as before and never runs out of air. The Zone also uses cannons frequently to help Sonic move from platform to platform. These cannons automatically turn themselves around, altering the direction they are facing, and can be entered by simply touching them. The player can then fire these cannons by pressing 1/2. There are also air bubbles which will blast Sonic into the air and conveyor belts that can take Sonic in different directions. This Zone also features fields with lava pools next to the conveyor belts that can be stood on without taking damage; in return, the player's remaining time will deplete twice as fast for as long as Sonic stands on the lava.

Overview[]

Zone 2-1[]

In this Zone, the time limit starts off at one minute.

Zone 2-2[]

In this Zone, the time limit starts off at one minute. Multiple gates between areas in the Zone appear here that lead to hidden sections. This makes this Zone more confusing than the others. In order to find the Keys here, the player must choose the appropriate gates. Most of them however lead to dead ends with triangles.

Zone 2-3[]

In this Zone, the time limit starts off at one minute. This Zone has many bifurcations going down here, as well as platforms with passages to the lower floors. There are also cannons here that independently fire Sonic to the top of the Zone. The entrance to the Bonus Stage is hidden in this stage.

Zone 2-4[]

In this Zone, there is no time limit. When beginning this Zone, the player has to go down a slope with a large amount of Rings to collect, breakable ice pillars and starfish, and spikes along it. At the end, the player will enter a hole and pass through a chute that takes them to the boss fight with the Kani Pearl. After defeating it and reclaiming the Chaos Emerald, the player will automatically move into Labyrinth of the Factory Zone 3-1.

Boss[]

Main article: Kani Pearl
SLSeaBoss

The Kani Pearl, from Sonic Labyrinth.

The boss of the Labyrinth of the Sea is the Kani Pearl, a hermit crab-like robot. It is fought in Zone 2-4. The boss fight begins with a series of tiny crabs scuttering along the ground. The player must dodge the tiny crabs and the Kani Pearl itself will appear. This boss crawls sideways along a narrow three-pronged platform. When it gets to each branch, it randomly opens its shell and shoots a pearl bullet. Once its shell is open, the player can damage it with an attack. This boss takes five hits to defeat.
