The Kunai Grapple is an Item Box power-up that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a Projectile Item used primarily to attack rivals.

The Kunai Grapple's icon takes the kunai leaves the purple aura spear in its wake.

Overview[]

In gameplay, the Kunai Grapple can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Ninja Espio. As with most other Items, Metal Sonic and Metal Sonic Mach 3.0 can also use the Kunai Grapple if they use the Steal Item, or Fortune Teller Amy if she uses Lucky Draw or Wall of Cards to steal it from the aforementioned user.

Once obtained, the player can utilize the Kunai Grapple by pressing its icon on the bottom of the HUD. When used, the user sets loose this power-up's kunai, which will travel down the lane it was deployed on in front of the user until it hits obstacles, Badniks, any rival characters, or it wears off. However, the Kunai Grapple's kunai will move along with the user whenever they switch lanes, and return back to the user once it wears off. The duration of the Kunai Grapple is shown by the decreasing gauge on top of this power-up's icon on the bottom of the HUD whenever the Kunai Grapple is in effect. Rival characters that make contact with the Kunai Grapple will take damage, causing them to lose Rings and slow down momentarily. In addition, the Kunai Grapple can increase the speed of the user for a short amount of time, if the user successfully hits the rival with the Kunai Grapple. To avoid the Kunai Grapple, the playable character has to either step out of its lane or jump over it.

The Kunai Grapple can also be upgraded by leveling the user up to level 6 and 12 respectively. For each upgrade, the Kunai Grapple will increase speed.
