Plus, we've got an expert treasure hunter with us, right, Knux?
Don't patronize me. But yes.

Sonic the Hedgehog and Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Special

Knuckles the Echidna is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing. He is an anthropomorphic echidna and Knuckles the Echidna's counterpart from another dimension set in the recent past, where he is a treasure hunter and the guardian of the Master Emerald from Angel Island.

Appearance

Knuckles is an anthropomorphic echidna with red fur that covers most of his body, peach skin on his muzzle, a white crescent-shaped patch of fur on his chest, and black eyes. He also has seven dreadlock-like spines on his head and a medium-sized tail.

For attire, Knuckles wears red and yellow shoes, each with green cuffs and a gray, sextuple-bolted plate on top. He also wears white, mitten-like gloves with sock-like cuffs and two spiked knuckles on each hand.

History

Seasons of Chaos

Knuckles fighting Metal Knuckles, from Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Special.

While relaxing in Mushroom Hill Zone, Knuckles met a Pocky, who gave him one of the Chaos Emeralds. Right after accepting the gem, however, Knuckles was ambushed by Metal Knuckles. Just as he had Metal Knuckles on the ropes, the robot made a giant mushroom cave in above some animals. Though Knuckles managed to save the animals, the distraction allowed Metal Knuckles to get away with the Chaos Emerald. Following its trail to Spring Valley Zone, Knuckles rescued Sonic just as he was repelled by Metal Sonic, who had just swiped another Chaos Emerald. After telling Sonic, Tails and Amy his story, Tails deduced that Eggman was seeking out the Chaos Emeralds. Knuckles thus teamed up with Sonic and Tails to secure the rest of the Chaos Emeralds. Making their way to Summer Falls Zone, Knuckles and his team came across Fang, Bark and Bean, who had been hired by Eggman to find the Chaos Emeralds. Knuckles proceeded to engage Bark, but their fight ultimately ended in a draw and distracted them from securing the local Chaos Emerald, which fell over the edge of a waterfall. Unable to recover the Chaos Emerald, Knuckles, Sonic and Tails decided to move on.[1]

Tailing Fang's gang to Autumn Forest Zone, Knuckles and his team eventually came across Eggman and Metal Sonic. The trio proceeded to attack Eggman and surrounded him, but Metal Sonic escaped them. Later, they were joined by Fang's gang and Amy, who had brought Mighty and Ray with her. Eggman proceeded to explain that Heavy King had overthrown him and begun collecting the Chaos Emeralds to gain ultimate power and conquer the world. Hearing this, Knuckles joined forces with Fang and Eggman. The group subsequently went to Winter Caverns Zone, where they got to the entrance of Eggman's base. There, Knuckles and the group were attacked by Metal Sonic and Metal Knuckles. They proceeded to fight the robots until Eggman regained control of them. Inside the base, the group found Heavy King, who began bombarding them with energy projectiles empowered by the seven Chaos Emeralds. Fortunately, Knuckles and his allies were able to recover the Chaos Emeralds after Sonic managed to get Heavy King's full attention. Afterward, Knuckles and his allies departed the base and decided to share the Chaos Emeralds between them to keep Eggman from getting them. Taking the green Chaos Emerald with him, Knuckles parted ways with Sonic as he pointed out his strange sense of humor.[1]

Personality

As guardian of the Master Emerald, Knuckles is very serious about his duties to the gem and Angel Island, often wanting to solve trouble as quickly as possible so he can return to his post. Though usually laid-back as well, Knuckles has the heart of a fighter and he has been shown to love a good fight, being willing to encourage even Bark the Polar Bear to fight him. Also, while far from unintelligent, Knuckles is not necessarily the sharpest tool in the shed, and can say rather stupid things without even realizing it or fail to understand heavily implied things.[1]

Despite his somewhat rough exterior, Knuckles is very kind and selfless, being willing to risk his own life for the lives of others, no matter how small. Knuckles is also not beyond showing sympathy, as he was visibly sad when Eggman told the story of Heavy King's betrayal. Also, while proud of his skills as a treasure hunter, he is modest and does not want people to patronize him for his skills.[1]

Powers and abilities

Knuckles boasts immense super strength, enough so to lift a falling mushroom at the size of a building. Knuckles is also an expert hand-to-hand combatant that can go toe-to-toe with other strong fighters like Bark the Polar Bear and Metal Knuckles, and even managing to overpower the latter in spite of being ambushed by it.[1]

Knuckles is quite fast and has quick reflexes to match. He has been shown keeping up with Sonic and Tails at high speeds and he is even able to keep up with and dodge direct attacks from the likes of Metal Knuckles, despite the latter's great speed and mobility. Knuckles also has the ability to glide by catching the air underneath his dreadlocks. He can also use the sharp spikes on his fists to quickly traverse almost any surface and dig underground. In addition, Knuckles is an expert treasure hunter, with Sonic attesting that he can find a Chaos Emerald without an Emerald Radar.[1]
