In the late-afternoon time at Green Hill, Knuckles the Echidna challenges the player, who controls Classic Sonic, in a race to the Goal Plate. On the way there, the player must confront badniks (namely, Moto Bugs, Buzz Bombers, and Buzzers) and obstacles to beat Knuckles to the Goal Plate. However, several badniks are many times their normal size, thus making the race more difficult to complete. When the player crosses the Goal Plate before Knuckles, the player is ranked according to his/her time. If the player reaches the Goal Plate in less than one minute and twenty seconds, he/she is awarded an "S" rank.
Trivia
A remixed version of "Super Sonic Racing" is the background music for this Challenge Act.
This is one of the few instances in the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series where the original zone was in the daytime, but this Challenge Act takes place during the late-afternoon. Other instances of this occasion occur in Splash Hill Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 and Windy Hill Zone Two (Wii U version) and Zone Three (Nintendo 3DS version) of Sonic Lost World.
