Jungle Joyride (ジャングル・ジョイライド Janguru Joiraido?) is the eighth Action Stage in the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed, and the sixth Stage in the Wii/PlayStation 2 version of Sonic Unleashed. The area takes place in a tropical paradise with jungles, clear waters, small villages and ancient ruins. It is located around the coastline near Adabat.
During the events of the game, Sonic the Hedgehog and Chip came here to search for the keys to unlock the local Gaia Temple.
Description[]
Jungle Joyride is based off real-life locations in Southeast Asia, such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Cambodia. A tropical paradise, Jungle Joyride is an archipelago of islands dotting a beautiful coast. The sea is also dotted with smaller sandy islands that have a few palm trees on them and a few sharp outcrops.
The landmasses in Jungle Joyride have rocky landscapes with cliffs, canyons and valleys. Otherwise, they are covered in dense jungles featuring both palm trees and regular trees (which can grow surprisingly large), grass, and big-leafed bushes. There are also moss, grass and hanging bushes growing on the more barren rock surfaces. Some of the islands have as well wide rivers running through them, forming gargantuan waterfalls with some occasional rocks and trees sticking out of them. The coastlines in Jungle Joyride do not have a consistent layout; instead, they alternate between sandy beaches and steep cliffs that lead into the jungle. There are also several wooden piers around the coastline and in the sea.
In the shallows are several residential stilt house villages which resemble real-life Toraja stilt huts. These buildings are all connected by wooden piers. Additionally, ancient ruins like towers, pillars, temples and stone paths can be found all over Jungle Joyride, like in the jungle where they form abandoned cities and in the sea where some are only partially submerged.
In the daytime acts, Jungle Joyride is lit up by the sun and has a bright sky with only a few clouds. In the nighttime acts, Jungle Joyride has torches that lit up the paths, while the sky is colored in a perpetual orange twilight from a setting sun.
Story[]
Following Professor Pickle's lead on a Gaia Temple in Adabat, Sonic the Werehog and Chip traveled to Jungle Joyride to find the key fragments for the gate to the Gaia Temple. Arriving during the night, the duo soon found a key fragment.
After restoring Shamar's continent, Sonic and Chip returned to Jungle Joyride during the day and found another key fragment. Using the key fragments, Sonic and Chip opened the path to the Gaia Temple, but were ambushed by the Egg Lancer, send to secure the Gaia Temple, on the way. However, Sonic swiftly defeated the Egg Lancer.
At the Gaia Temple, Chip somehow began to feel scared, confusing Sonic. Inside the Temple, Chip activated it and Sonic placed the powerless purple Chaos Emerald into the Temple's pedestal, restoring the Emerald's power and bringing Adabat's continent back to its proper place. At the same time, Chip found a mural inside the Temple which sucked him into the wall. There, he met a mysterious light that restored his memories. Chip then returned to Sonic and told him of his true identity.
Gameplay[]
In the daytime acts on both versions of Sonic Unleashed, the player must cross water sections which require that the player is moving at top speed, or Sonic risks sinking into the bottomless sea.
On the Wii/PlayStation 2 version of Sonic Unleashed, the daytime acts include hanging vines which Sonic can swing through treetops with. They also have a section with obstacles in the form of floating stone blocks that can fall down on the player.
In the daytime acts on the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed there are no exclusive gimmicks. However, there are unique hazards in the water skimming sections like crumbling ancient pillars and sudden water sprouts, both of which can send the player plummeting into the bottomless seas upon contact. On solid ground, there are also swinging axes that the player must slide under to avoid. In the daytime Act 1, Jungle Joyride also has stone statues that can shoot water stream which push the player into bottomless pits.
In the nighttime acts on the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed, the player can use poles to propel Sonic across grabs. The player is also introduced to plant-themed switches that must be pressed in the order that mirrors a blooming flower to open paths.
Overview[]
Xbox 360/PlayStation 3[]
Daytime[]
Act 1[]
This act takes place across the majority of Jungle Joyride, with the player first traveling through a village, before moving into the jungle and crossing different islands. At the beginning of the act, the player runs down a pier section, where they have to use the Quick Step to change to different rows of piers when they abruptly end. After this, the player enters a 2.5D gameplay section, where they have to continue traveling through the village and down the piers. Following this, the player enters the jungle, where they have to make it through a gorge, before being confronted by a group of Aero-Chasers.
After getting through the jungle, the player enters a water skimming section, where they have to make it across the sea to the next island. Once on the next island, the player is faced with the Interceptor while having to avoid bombs. After making it through the island's jungle, the player enters a new water skimming section, before getting to the next island.
From the start of the new island, the player ascends and crosses the cliffs and waterfalls using various gimmicks, such as springs (some of which have spikes on the bottom), blue springs, Cannons, Rainbow Rings and Ramps, before entering an ancient city. After leaving the city, the player enters a valley with waterfalls that they have to cross by grinding on grind rails and by using the Homing Attack on enemies to cross gabs, before arriving at the Goal. It is in this act that Sonic and Chip are looking for one of the halves of Adabat's Gaia Key.
Act 2[]
This act takes place inside the jungle, on a circular race course comprised of ancient temples. Here, the player's objective is to complete a total of three laps on this course before reaching the Goal Ring. During the course of this act, the player has to use the Wall Jump and can utilize several gimmicks, such as grind rails, springs and Rainbow Rings. For each completed circuit, the course changes shape and becomes more difficult, being given more enemies, more obstacles, such as spikes and iron balls and gimmicks in new places. This whole act is played in 2.5D.
Act 3[]
This act takes place across the piers along the stilt house villages and the coast. The path for the whole act is composed on rows of piers that the player has to reach the end of, before arriving at the Goal Ring. During the course of the act, the player has to use the Quick Step to change to the different rows of piers when they abruptly end or risk falling into the water, much like the beginning of daytime Act 1, while avoiding obstacles, such as swinging axes, spikes and enemies on the narrow paths.
Nighttime[]
Act 1[]
This act takes place across a few small islands and the coastline of Jungle Joyride, and features much platforming across moving stone slabs, while bottomless waters are a constant looming threat. At the beginning of the act, the player starts out on a small island and has to travel to the next island through a pier. From there, the player has to use a slingshot pole to send Sonic flying to the next island, where the player has to take out a few waves of enemies. After that, the player travels further down the following pier to the next slingshot pole and sends Sonic the next island. Here, the player has to defeat a Big Mother to access a switch in order to proceed. From there, the player then has to scale the cliffs of the coastside, while avoiding waterfalls that starts and stops, to reach a switch that will bring forth swinging poles further down the path, which will allow the player to proceed. After arriving in the new area, the player then has to bring a Key Stone to its pedestal to open a gate on the cliffs. Inside the gate, the player has to defeat a Titan and then press a series of switches in the right sequence in order to open the path to the Goal. It is in this act that Sonic and Chip are looking for one of the halves of Adabat's Gaia Key.
Act 2[]
This acts take place across some partially submerged ruins in the sea and the cliffside of Jungle Joyride. At the beginning of the act, the player has to travel across the sunken ruins through platforms that sink and rises from the bottomless waters and Dark Bats. Once the player arrives at the first island, they have to defeat several waves of enemies before being allowed to proceed. From there, the player has to make it across a gab through some platforms and a few Dark Bat. After that, the player arrives in an area where they have to press some switches in the right sequence to make a path of Dark Bats appear, which the player has to use to cross a grab. While looking for one of the switches, the player has to defeat another long series of enemies, before being allowed to use it. After having pressed the switches correctly and used the Dark Bats to cross the gab, the player arrives at the cliffs, where they have to defeat several waves of enemies, before gaining access to the Goal Ring.
Empire City and Adabat Adventure Pack DLC[]
The downloadable content pack for the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed, "Empire City and Adabat Adventure Pack", introduced three additional daytime acts and two additional nighttime acts for Jungle Joyride to the game. These acts are basically extensions of the original acts in the game, but are much more difficult to complete. The pack was released on Xbox Live for $4.13 and on the PlayStation Network for $3.00 on 11 June 2009.
Daytime[]
Act 1-2[]
This act is basically the same as the daytime Act 1 in the game, expect the act has been modified, having been given a generally harder layout with more gimmicks, more enemies and more hazardous and abundant obstacles, such as spikes and swinging axes. Towards the end of the stage with the waterfall section, however, the player has to run across the waterfalls, before returning to the course, but then has to play the area in reserve from the presumed end of the act to the beginning of the waterfall section, where the Goal Ring is.
Act 4[]
This act takes place out the sea with submerged ruins everywhere. At the beginning of the act, the player has to skim across the water surface while avoiding water sprouts, falling pillars and bombs. Once the player gets sent into the air by a spring on a large circular platform, the player begins moving between the ruins and rock formations as well, while avoiding flying axes, enemies and spikes, before arriving at the Goal Ring.
Act 5[]
This act takes place out the sea with submerged ruins and large rocks forming walls that encloses the path. At the beginning of the act, the player starts out by skinning across the water surface, while avoiding obstacles such as spikes and bombs, until the player is confronted by a group of Aero-Chasers. After facing the Aero Chasers, the player enters a full pipe where they can run on the roof of it to avoid obstacles. After exiting the pipe, the player has to make it through narrow water-filled gorges and ruins, before eventually arriving at the Goal Ring.
Nighttime[]
Act 1-2[]
This act is basically the same as the nighttime Act 1 in the game, except the player starts out on the island in front of the waterfall cliffs and plays the level backwards. At the beginning of the act, the player is instantly confronted by a Titan and some minor enemies. After then using a slingshot pole on the other side of the rocks to get to the piers and getting to the next island, the player has to use some platforms to get to an island next door. There, the player has to pull a leaver that will allow the player to use a climbing pole to cross a gab to the next island. Once on the next island, the player has to defeat another Titan and more minor enemies, before being able to proceed to the next island. Once on the next island, the player has to defeat two Titans and two Lightning Masters to make the Goal Ring appear.
Act 3[]
This act mainly takes place inside a water-filled recess in an ancient city. At the beginning of the act, the player is positioned in the bottom of the recess. Here, the player has to solve a puzzle, where they must use leavers scattered over the recess to control the water level inside the recess to raise platforms that can take the player to the door at the top. After getting through the door, the player enters a staircase with a platform on top, where they have to defeat a wave of enemies to make the Goal Ring appear.
Wii/PlayStation 2[]

After passing through the jungle section, which involves skimming on water, the player re-enter a coast, before proceeding down a pier, into a stilt house village, while being confronted by an Aero-Chaser. After making it through the village, the player is send flying into another stilt house village by a series of springs, Dash Rings, and a Rainbow Ring. Boss[]
The boss encountered in Jungle Joyride is the Egg Lancer, a mech made from the combined parts of the Egg Beetle and Egg Devil Ray, which is piloted by Dr. Eggman/Little Fighters. It can be fought after unlocking the Boss Gate in Adabat's Entrance Stage in the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed, and after unlocking the Boss Stage in Adabat's Gaia Gate in the Wii/PlayStation 2 version of Sonic Unleashed. For this boss battle, the player controls Sonic the Hedgehog.
During the fight, the Egg Launcher will attack the player by firing large moving laser beams, shooting small fireballs, launching missiles, or by using its giant pincher to crush Sonic (Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version only). At some points during the battle, the player's perspective will shift to different angles, with the Egg Launcher's attack formations changing according to the perspective. To defeat the Egg Launcher, the player has to avoid its attacks and attack its cockpit, either with the Homing Attack or the Sonic Boost.

Trivia[]
- The ruins seen around the stage in both times of day are reminiscent of the Buddhist relics seen around Asia, primarily from Angkor Wat in Cambodia.
- The background music for Jungle Joyride's daytime stages uses the same stock instrument sample as Sonic R's "Back in Time," the music for the course Regal Ruin. As this is a common sample for dance music with a jungle motif, this is likely a coincidence.
- In the Wii/PlayStation 2 version, should the player pause the game near a body of water, all movement in the game will be paused except that of the water.
- In the Wii/PlayStation 2 version, the rocky paths found in the Special Mission that is unlocked when all the other collectibles (bar the secret movie found in this stage) are found, look remarkably similar to the platforms found in Seaside Hill in Sonic Heroes.
- This mission, as well as the second Time Attack mission and the second Ring collecting mission, are also set in exclusive areas not seen in the main stage. They take place within the cloud-filled jungle canopy, a ruin-covered rock face overlooking the ocean, and a damp, crystal-coated cave, respectively. Using cheats to fly around, it is revealed that all of these unique locations are contained within the same map, and in certain places have partially complete sections that connect them together which go completely unused in the game. This goes from the terrain beyond the Goal Ring at the ruin-covered rock face overlooking the ocean to the damp, crystal coated cave.
- The DLC Action Stage in the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version, Night Act 3, takes place on the same map as Act 1, using terrain that can be found just beyond the Goal Ring of Act 1.
