Reception[]

On 29 April 2019, the first look at Carrey's rendition of Dr. Robotnik was leaked, a day before the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog got released. Fans and media reacted mostly with surprise at Robotnik's first look.[4][5] The following day, the first official trailer for the film was released, as well as its official poster. The two received mixed-to-negative reactions from the fans and media, mostly because of Sonic's initial design. However, Jim Carrey as Robotnik received mostly positive reactions, with some fans remarking that he is channeling his '90s era portrayals in a good way, and also that his appearance at the end of the trailer was more similar to Robotnik's game counterpart.[6][7][8]

On 10 January 2021, Jim Carrey won an award at the Critics' Choice Super Awards in the category "Best Villain in a Movie" for his portrayal of Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog.[9]

Trivia[]

  • Interestingly, Jim Carrey starred in the 2009 movie, A Christmas Carol. The Sonic the Hedgehog series had spoofed the story in Archie Comics 1993's "Sonic's Christmas Carol!" and recently in 2020 on Sega's YouTube channel; "An Eggman Carol", both of which star the doctor as Ebenezer Scrooge with a twist to the tale that the doctor does not reform. Sonic the Hedgehog himself has some connection to the holiday, as his design is partly based from a 1990 Japanese's perception (Naoto Ohshima) of Santa Claus.
  • During the production of the first film, Jim Carrey recommended the 1971 song, Where Evil Grows by The Poppy Family. He recommended it because he got to hear the song when he was a child.
  • According to multiple sources, ever since around April 2020, Jim Carrey wanted to wear a fat suit for the doctor (to also make the character fat) in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to make him look a lot more like he is in the games.[10][11][12] While that didn't happen for unknown reasons, he statedly wanted to do the same thing in Sonic the Hedgehog 3[13] with it been claimed that Carrey's wish finally came true, due to it being stated that Robotnik himself gained weight in the privately screened trailer for the latter shown at CinemaCon 2024.[14][15]
  • Although Jim Carrey announced he had plans to retire after the sequel (Sonic the Hedgehog 2) before changing his mind and returning in the third film (Sonic the Hedgehog 3), producers Neal Moritz and Toby Ascher stated that they would not give the role of the character to anyone else if he did not come back.[16]
  • Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves (the English voice of Shadow the Hedgehog) had previously starred in a film, 2016's The Bad Batch.
  • Carrey’s performance in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, produced by Paramount Pictures, marks the second time an actor played both Eggman and his grandfather. The first was Mike Pollock in the anime series; Sonic X, voicing both Dr. Eggman and Gerald Robotnik. Afterwards, the actor would transition to voicing both characters in the games.
    • Furthermore, in the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 scene where Eggman and Gerald Robotnik meet for the first time, there's a fourth wall break by the characters saying that they are so similar that looks like two film characters being portrayed by the same actor, referring to the fact that Carrey plays both characters in the movie.
