The Ivory Lightning (アイボリー・ライトニング Aiborī Raitoningu?) is a transformation that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is the Color Power gained by absorbing an Ivory Wisp and its Hyper-go-on, which turns the user into an entity made of pure electricity.

Appearance[]

When using the Ivory Lightning, the user transforms into a sentient and light ivory-colored bolt of lightning. In Sonic's case, his entire body turns into a large version of his own head with nearly no facial features except for his eyes, which do not have pupils and are pale yellow, and ears, which do not have ear canals. His quills have also merged together into a zig-zagging figure resembling a lightning bolt.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Lost World[]

The Ivory Lightning made its first appearance in the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Lost World. In this game, it can first be used in Frozen Factory Zone 1. In gameplay, the Ivory Lightning can both jump and Double Jump, and any enemy the Ivory Lightning touches is either instantly destroyed or dealt heavy damage. The player can also pull themselves into a target with a tread of electricity, akin to the Homing Attack. When this attack connects, the Ivory Lightning lets out an electrical surge that destroys all nearby enemies. The Ivory Lightning can also connect and hang onto midair yellow coils by targeting them like when targeting an enemy. While hanging onto a coil, the player will swing around it until the player releases for an enhanced launch. As an additional effect, the Ivory Lightning can automatically pull in nearby Rings and 5 Ring Bonuses, similar to the Thunder Shield.

To use the Ivory Lightning in gameplay, the player must tap the icon of the Ivory Wisp on the touchscreen while in possession of an Ivory Wisp. If the player is in an area not suited for the Ivory Lightning however, the Ivory Wisp will go dormant (which is illustrated by its on-screen icon sleeping), thus preventing the player from becoming the Ivory Lightning. Once transformed into the Ivory Lightning, the player's Wisp Gauge starts to deplete, and once it runs out, Sonic will revert back to normal. To extend its duration, the player has to collect more Ivory Wisps. To pull themselves towards a target with the Ivory Lightning, the player must press Snnwiidsxbuttondisco/Snnwiidsybuttondisco during a jump while close to a target with a reticle on it.

Team Sonic Racing[]

In Team Sonic Racing, the Ivory Lightning makes an appearance as a product of the Ivory Wisp Item Box power-ups that can be obtained on the race tracks. In this game, rather than transforming the playable character when using the Ivory Lighting, the game manifests the Ivory Lightning's power for the playable character to use.

To use the Ivory Lightning in gameplay, the player has to press Cross/A button/Switch b while in possession of an Ivory Wisp. When used, an electrical aura will appear above all the racers (except for the user and their teammates). Shortly thereafter, the targeted racers will be electrocuted by a sudden electric arc that appears over them, causing them to take damage and spin out temporarily. This makes the Ivory Lightning a great comeback item. Although accurate, the Ivory Lightning is not unavoidable, as the player can use their Team Ultimate, an Invincibility power-up, the Jade Ghost, or the Yellow Drill to avoid it.

Powers and abilities[]

As the Ivory Lightning, the user gains the same properties as that of a real lightning bolt. Associated with this form, the player can move at lightning-fast speeds and with acrobatic movements as living electricity, with enough force to electrocute and easily penetrate robot armor. The user also obtains electrokinetic abilities in this form, allowing the user to manipulate electricity. The user can either form treads of electricity that they can use to either electrocute enemies or connect themselves to targets as tethers.

Weakness[]

The Ivory Lightning's main weakness is that it can only be used for a few seconds and requires more Hyper-go-on from Ivory Wisps to be maintained. In addition, making contact with water while in Ivory Lightning form will cancel the transformation.

Trivia[]

  • In this form, Sonic's ability to attract Rings and Double Jump is very similar to the effects that the Thunder Shield grants the players in some games.
