Being Badniks based on dragonflies, the Item Mechas have two large eyes on the sides of their red spherical heads, a skinny red and black tail, and two sets of insect-like wings used for flight. Most notably however, the Item Mecha's body is composed of an Item Box which they use in order to disguise themselves from enemies.
Overview[]
In Sonic Superstars, the Item Mechas appear exclusively in Speed Jungle Zone Act 1. In gameplay, the Item Mechas at first look identical to any ordinary Item Box. However, when the player approaches an Item Mecha, they will begin to reveal their true form before beginning to fly around a small preoccupied area. After some time has passed, the Item Mecha will then quickly fly offscreen, making them completely out of reach for the player. Despite this, the Item Mechas are rather harmless and easy to avoid Badniks, as they posses no offense means to damage the player directly and are usually out of their way.
Like with most Badniks, the Item Mechas can be destroyed via any attack method. However, due to their erratic flight patterns and their ability to fly offscreen after a set period of time, it can be quite challenging attempting to destroy these Badniks. Upon destruction, the Item Mechas release an Animal and award the player 100 points, as well as whatever Item Box power-up they currently displayed.
Powers and abilities[]
Thanks to their wings, the Item Mechas are able to fly around in insect-like patterns. The Item Mechas are also capable of completely mimicking the appearance and functionality of an Item Box, as they can both disguise themself to look like any ordinary item box, as well as give the item displayed on their Item Box-like body upon being destroyed. Unlike most Badniks, the Item Mechas posses no offense means to damage their foes, making them solely rely on their camouflage and their flying capabilities to avoid danger.
Notes[]
↑While not listed in any instruction manuals, the internal files of Sonic Superstars refer to this enemy as "ItemMecha."
