Plot

At his villainous lair, Eggman joyfully dusts his collection of inventions, contemplating some impending evil use for them. However, to his horror, he discovers that his Particle Accelerator has disappeared and proceeds to summon local law enforcement for investigation. As the Beaver Policeman asks for a description of Eggman's his missing property, the doctor breaks down in frustration and sadness as he points out how distinct it is. Meanwhile, Sonic, who has already been called to the crime scene, is watching everything from the couch and eating a chili dog, enjoying Eggman's tantrum. At the same time, Orbot and Cubot are taking some of the villagers on a tour around the lair, showing places like Eggman's thinkcubator, before taking them to the crime scene where Eggman continues his description of his Particle Accelerator.

Bored, Sonic asks why he has been called here, to which Eggman alleges that his Particle Acceleerator had been stolen by him. Sonic denies the accusation but Eggman points out that prior evidence, including matching footprints alongside the remains of chili dogs, links Sonic to the crime. Sonic points out that he is the hero while Eggman is the villain to no avail, but the Beaver Policeman says he needs more evidence before he can arrest Sonic. To make matters worse, the Wolf Policeman shows up with recent photos of multiple thefts that have been committed throughout the Unnamed Village, all featuring similar evidence to those in Eggman's Lair. While the Beaver Policeman attempts to arrest Sonic, the hedgehog instead declares his intentions to clear his name by discovering the true culprit and proceeds to escape the scene.

Meanwhile, the villagers that fell victim to the thefts have gathered at Mayor Fink's mansion, voicing what had been stolen from them and their demands to pursue Sonic (Mrs. Vandersnout goes as far as suggest to kill Sonic with poisoned cookies). While the mayor attempts to keep the developing mob from going off the rails, Knuckles arrives and catches everyone's attention by scratching a chalkboard. Knuckles claims that he will catch Sonic for them, but when Mayor Fink says that they will all pitch in, Knuckles refuses their help. When he fails comically to open the front door though, Knuckles walks out on the group through a window.

With the public having turned against him, Sonic, now operating incognito, has adopted a disguise and a false identity (having assumed the name "Bob") as a warehouse worker in a different village. In the midst of loading crates, Sonic and co-worker Earl tells him to take it easy so he does not make the others look bad. As the pair breaks for lunch, Sonic explains that he is in a hurry because he is looking for someone. Upon hearing this, Earl mentions a stranger in the West Forest. Following up on this information, Sonic decides to investigate but is halted when Earl is injured by a stray horseshoe from a nearby game. Meanwhile, Knuckles is tracking Sonic using taste when he finds out the other villagers have followed him. Knuckles, however, still refuses their help, even as he sinks into quicksand.

Deciding to first assist his injured co-worker, Sonic takes Earl to his physician Doc, who explains that he needs Sonic to collect a pink orchid for an Anti-Horseshoe Elixir in the East Forest. Postponing his search, Sonic heads towards the East Forest, passing by Knuckles just as he is asking around about the blue hedgehog. Noticing Sonic, Knuckles follows him, thinking he knows about Sonic's whereabouts (not seeing through Sonic's disguise). In the East Forest, Sonic quickly manages to find a pink orchid but encounters Knuckles, who "catches" him with a basket. Recognizing Knuckles' attempt, Sonic explains who he is and that he has not stolen anything. Knuckles, however, reveals that he actually intends to assist his friend since he does not want him to go to jail. Sonic insists, however, that they must help out Earl first, confusing Knuckles.

Upon delivering the orchid, Doc promises Sonic and Knuckles that he will fix up Earl, and the duo resume the case together and pursue Sonic's lead, narrowly avoiding Mayor Fink (who is knocked out by a horseshoe) and his search party. The duo discovers a remote shack and are then confronted by Metal Sonic. Knuckles attempts to engage the robot but his efforts are proven futile as his punches are shrugged off and he is beaten into unconsciousness by Metal Sonic's laser. Sonic then angrily attacks his mechanical doppelgänger and manages to gain the upper hand. However, Metal Sonic reveals Eggman's Particle Accelerator, affirming himself to be the thief, and uses it to infuse himself with a massive quantity of energy. The machine then chases Sonic across the island. Feigning fatigue upon reaching his shack, Sonic manages to surprise his opponent by throwing a horseshoe at the Particle Accelerator, overloading it. The resulting explosion then renders Metal Sonic inert.

Sonic then collects all of the stolen goods from Metal Sonic and returns to the Village Center alongside Knuckles. Approaching Eggman, Sonic returns the Particle Accelerator, yet the doctor remains unconvinced that Sonic was not the perpetrator of the theft since he has all the stolen goods and demands his arrest. Before anyone can make a move, however, Earl, now revived, reveals the inactive Metal Sonic, which Sonic establishes to be the real culprit motivated by Eggman to incriminate Sonic. Eggman denounces the claim, takes his robot and particle accelerator, and retreats to his lair. Sonic thanks Earl before he is again hit by a stray horseshoe, making Sonic and Knuckles laugh.

Later, a group of villagers, oblivious to Sonic's exoneration, still purse the hedgehog but are deterred by the nighttime noises.

Goofs

  • When Sonic arrives at the city hall and is proven innocent of the thefts, Dave the Intern and Mayor Fink can be seen in the background, yet in the next scene they are still out looking for Sonic to apprehend him.
  • Scorpion-bit's tail appears smaller than in "Aim Low".
