You go through this stage each time you begin a new game. Use this area to practice your moves and grab all the Rings you can. Stand over holograms to open gates.

— Description, Knuckles' Chaotix manual

Isolated Island, also known as Practice Stage,[1] is the tutorial stage in Knuckles' Chaotix. It is simply a starter area with no Badniks, hazards or bosses, allowing the player to practice the new gameplay feature introduced in the game. In the Scenario Quest, the player goes through the 5-part Introduction stage, whereas the player can enter the 4-Level Training place outside the main game.

Description[]

The island where the Newtrogic High Zone is situated can be seen off in the distance of the stage at its highest elevation.

Story[]

When selecting Scenario mode for the first time, the game starts off here as Knuckles, after a few seconds into the stage, the player stumbles across Dr. Robotnik. The Doctor is shocked by the player's entrance and flees using his trusted creation, Metal Sonic. It is then revealed that Dr. Robotnik had captured Espio in the Combi Catcher. After freeing Espio, Knuckles is then joined by the Chameleon by the Link Rings.

Gameplay[]

Isolated Island is composed of a tutorial level, and four practice stages. The player enters the tutorial level whenever creating a new game, and are forced to play as Knuckles for its duration. The level is split into 5 parts[note 1]. Reaching the finish area of one part will teleport the player to the next one, the exception to this being the 5th part, where the player will instead find a Goal Plate that ends the level and transports them to World Entrance. After completing the first part, the player is joined by Espio the Chameleon, who serves as their combi partner for the remainder of the stage.

Curiously, if the player completes the Introduction level with 50 Rings or more, they will be forced to enter the Giant Ring that spawns in order to complete the level and be teleported to World Entrance. This contrasts other stages in the game, where entering the Giant Ring to access the Special Stage is optional. If the player completes the level without 50 Rings or more, they will instead be directly teleported to World Entrance. Regardless of whether the player enters the Giant Ring or not, no results score tally will play upon completion of the level.

When selecting the Training option in the main menu, the player has access to four additional Isolated Island levels. These levels are greatly different to the introduction level, but they maintain the same background and textures. All of these levels contain a continuous loop, forcing the player to find an alternate means out of the level. These levels end once the player reaches a strange-looking flower at the end of the stage. In the last level, the player has to find all of the strange-looking plants.

Despite being a tutorial stage, some of the levels contain gimmicks not found in any of the following attractions, mainly a water slide.

Archie Comics[]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Isolated Island is a location on Sonic's World. Its past is virtually identical to its game counterpart's. Following that, Dr. Ellidy sat up a residence here and repurposed the island's leftover Badniks into his helpers. During the Shattered World Crisis, the Freedom Fighters came to Isolated Island to help Ellidy with his problems with Phage, retrieving one of the Chaos Emeralds from the island's Lake of Rings in the process.

Trivia[]

  • A classical version of the island's theme, "Door Into Summer", was used for the Collection Room in Sonic Generations.
  • If the player is teleported to the next section of the introduction level while under the effects of the Swap item, the power-up will not wear off (despite its icon disappearing from the screen), and they will spawn in the next section as the character they were swapped to, forcing them to complete the remainder of the level as that character.

Notes[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 In the Level Select, each part of the Introduction stage is considered a separate level, labeled as "Introduction" levels 0-4. Despite this, they are treated as one level in-game, as the player's time and Rings will carry over, and only the 5th part features a formal ending in the form of a Goal Plate.
