Isle of the Labyrinth is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series produced by Paramount Pictures and its spin-offs. It is a little isle on planet Earth. The area houses the entrance to the hidden Labyrinth.

Description[]

Overview[]

Sonic wakes up on the beach, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film).

The land is located in the Pacific Ocean right near the archipelago of Hawaii. It has no known name. It is a small isle containing palm trees and large rocks surrounded by a beach. The only known residents are the local wildlife, for example, a crab.

Giant Owls' influence[]

The recess activates, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film).

The isle is a place the Giant Owls used the construct the Labyrinth. Notably, the landmass is located on the opposite end of planet Earth from Siberia where the Compass resided. There is a recess on one side of the isle for utilizing the compass to disclose the undersea temple's entrance. When activated, the mechanisms glow green before parting the waters to reveal the labyrinthine structure, accompanied by a large beam of light reaching the sky that can be seen by others from hundreds of miles around.

Given there are stairs leading from the isle to the temple, the giant owls oddly intended their construction of the Master Emerald's hiding place for bipedal[1] creatures to navigate. It is an odd and risky design choice, given retrieving the Master Emerald in the first place started their conflict with the Echidnas.

History[]

Past[]

Presumably the isle's formation is similar to those in the real world, but there is room to speculate due to its significance. Why and when the Giant Owls chosen this location to house the Master Emerald is unknown.

Film series[]

Sonic the Hedgehog 2[]

After obtaining the Compass in Siberia, Knuckles the Echidna and Dr. Ivo Robotnik with his Drones used a Ring portal to transport themselves onto the isle. Robotnik scanned the area with his tech, finding the recess to insert the compass. With a flash, the Labyrinth revealed itself. The echidna stood determined to retrieve the Master Emerald while the doctor laughed giddily for the prospect of ultimate power.

Sonic and Knuckles unite, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film).

Elsewhere nearby on Hawaii, Sonic the Hedgehog noticed the light from the undersea temple, knowing they must have found where the Master Emerald is located. He left Tails with Tom and Maddie and ran across the waves. After a few bumps in the road, he reached the isle, waking up on its beach. Looking amazed by the large structure of the temple, he quickly ran down to encounter the duo.

After a battle and losing the Master Emerald, Sonic and Knuckles found themselves on the beach. Knuckles sulked as he became confused by the doctor's betrayal and Sonic's rescuing from drowning. The two sat on isle's beach, having a heart-to-heart while throwing sand at each other. They worked out their differences and in the end, Sonic reached out his hand and Knuckles took it. Immediately after, Tails flew by in the Tornado and picked them up.

Trivia[]

  • In the concept artwork, the isle didn't seem to exist. Instead, there were perhaps ideas of the Labyrinth temple being over looked by a rock in the middle of the ocean. From this, it is unknown what mechanics would have revealed the temple. It's further unclear during what part of the movie, where, or how Sonic and Knuckles would have been able to talk to one another.
  • The time of day between the isle's overhead shot and Knuckles and Robotnik standing on it's beach is different, as shown by the shadows.
  • The single crab on the isle could be in reference to Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie, in which a crab pinched Old Man Owl on Sonic’s beach.
