Giant worm that ambushes from underground and vomits projectiles.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

The Iblis Worm (イブリースクローラー Iburīsukurōrā?, lit. "Iblis Crawler") is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a type of fire-based worm creature amongst Iblis's Minions that is capable of burrowing and limited pyrokinesis.

Appearance[]

Iblis Worms have a traditional worm look. They resemble segmented worms composed of orange and red lava, and their back and head are covered in rock-like armor. They have no eyes or other visible facial features, and their mouth is composed of three creeping mandibles. Overall, they look similar to Iblis' phase two form, but with a simpler head, and are far smaller.

Game appearances[]

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)[]

The Iblis Worms first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) as enemies. In this game, they have five attack patterns. One of them consists of bursting out of the ground, walls, or ceilings which release shockwaves that can damage the player. Rumbling dust will indicate where they will appear. Their signature attack method is spitting fireballs at the player, which can be hard to avoid in areas with many enemies, although the fireballs can be grabbed with Psychokinesis. They can also sweep their body around in an attempt to hit their enemies, and breathe fire. Their most difficult attack to dodge is when they burrow back underground, where they cannot be reached by the player, as being caught in their path or the impact of their entry point will damage the player.

The Iblis Worms takes three hits to be defeated. It is also very difficult to use Psycho Smash or Psycho Shock on them, as when they move, they can sometimes block these attacks.

Sonic Generations[]

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, Iblis Worms from somewhere across spacetime appear as enemies in both Acts of Crisis City. In gameplay, they behave in roughly the same feral manner as in their debut game. This time around however, a noticeable yellow marker will show where they will emerge when approached by the player. They also still spew fireballs and have a nasty tendency to do so from the safety of the background. In addition, the player can unlock a statue of the Iblis Worm in the Statue Room.

Trivia[]

  • In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), when the player first encounters an Iblis Worm, the character will say something similar to "When it opens its mouth, that's my chance to attack!" However, Iblis Worms can be defeated regardless of whether or not their mouths are open.
  • The Iblis Worm was never mentioned by name in any Western material for Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). Its name was first mentioned in the console/PC version of Sonic Generations. However, the former game called the creature "Crawler" in its files.
