Hoverby[1] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing. It is a mass-produced, butterfly-based Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman.

The Hoverbys are based on butterflies. They have purple metallic bodies with wide eyes, yellow feelers, gray proboscis, and twin yellow rotary engines on the sides.

After Sonic the Hedgehog thwarted Dr. Eggman in their last encounter, the Doctor disappeared while his Hoverbys and the rest of his Badnik army remained. Without a leader however, the Hoverbys were directionless and no longer a unified threat.[2] Even so, they would still randomly attack anyone they came across[3] (although such incidents were more accidental than aggression-based[2]).

The Fate of Dr. Eggman

Eventually, the Hoverbys came under the control of Neo Metal Sonic, who made them and their fellow Badniks more cohesive.[2][4]

Defeating Hoverbys

Espio and Charmy defeating Hoverbys, from Sonic the Hedgehog #5.

A group of Hoverbys soon after attacked Sonic and Espio in a mountainous region, only to end up being destroyed by the two heroes. More Hoverbys would not long after try to attack Windmill Village, but Sonic and the Chaotix were able to stop them.[5]

Basically, the Hoverbys are mindless and silent drones programmed to follow their leader's every command. As such, when left without a leader to follow, they become directionless and only able to cause harm by accident. Under a guiding force however, they are cold and merciless machines who carry out their commands without question.[5]

Powers and abilities

Thanks to their engines, the Hoverbys are capable of flight.[5]
