The Hotaru Hi-Watt[1][note 1] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. A variant of the Hotaru, it is a robotic firefly-based Badnik that patrolled Stardust Speedway Zone.

Appearance[]

True to its name, the Hotaru Hi-Watt appears as a larger version of the firefly-based Hotaru Badnik; it has a circular yellow head with two black eyes and two yellow antenna, a red, cylindrical body with two silver legs on either side, and most notably, a large light bulb which serves as the robot's abdomen.

History[]

Sonic Mania[]

In Sonic Mania, the Hotaru Hi-Watt appeared to confront Sonic, Tails and Knuckles after they were transported to the past version of Stardust Speedway Zone. In the ensuing battle, the robot was defeated and the heroes made their way to the present.

Sonic Mania Plus[]

In Sonic Mania Plus, after being sent to the Past of Stardust Speedway Zone, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty and Ray came under attack by a rebuilt Hotaru Hi-Watt. Regardless, this robot was eventually destroyed by the heroes, allowing the group to make their way to the present undisturbed.

Powers and abilities[]

Stronger and tougher than the regular Hotaru, the Hotaru Hi-Watt possesses levitation and the ability to split itself into smaller Hotarus (which can put themselves back together again), allowing it to disappear at will. Its primary attack is firing a large electrical beam from its light bulb.

Battle[]

The Hotaru Hi-Watt is the mini-boss of Stardust Speedway Zone and the eleventh overall boss of Sonic Mania and Sonic Mania Plus. It is fought at the end of Stardust Speedway Act 1.

In Sonic Mania, the Hotaru Hi-Watt is fought with Sonic, Tails or Knuckles. In Sonic Mania Plus, it is fought with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty or Ray.

Boss guide[]

When the battle starts, the Hotaru Hi-Watt will fly up and out of the arena and deploy a regular Hotaru Badnik which will teleport around the arena four times whilst firing its beam. However, this Hotaru can just be attacked and defeated (though it is not mandatory to do in order to continue the boss). After that, two more Hotarus will appear at the top of the screen. These two will be connected by electrical arc which can damage the player if they are caught in it as the two Hotarus fly down. These Hotaru Badniks can also be either avoided or destroyed as well.

After the Hotarus' chain attack, the Hotaru Hi-Watt will reappear in the arena on either end of the screen and move across the area whilst firing its beam attack into the ground. The player must take this opportunity to attack the Hotaru Hi-Watt whilst avoiding taking damage from the attack. After it has traveled across the screen, the Hotaru Hi-Watt will fly back up and repeat the pattern. After taking six hits, the Hotaru Hi-Watt will be defeated. The player can then touch the Goal Plate that falls from the sky and finish the Act.

Trivia[]

  • The electrical attacks of every Hotaru variant present in this battle pierce through Thunder Shields, even though the electric beams of Hotarus present throughout the rest of Stardust Speedway Zone cannot. In addition, the Hotaru that shoots an electric beam downward in this battle uses different sprites for said beam compared to other Hotarus.
