Hidden Island R-1 is a lush tropical isle with fertile brown soil, grassy cliffs and palm trees. In the background, a view of the sea with small tropical islands and white clouds in the horizon can be seen.
Gameplay[]
As with the other "Hidden Island R-#" stages in Time Attack mode, Hidden Island R-1 is a side-scrolling circuit course where the player needs to complete five laps by passing through the Checkpoint Marker. Overall, the stage layout is relatively straightforward along its "main route" to the Checkpoint Marker. There are no Rings in this stage. Various optional paths in the stage usually lead to Item Boxes containing either a Tension Bonus or Maximum Tension Bonus.

In the beginning, the player runs through a loop and can either jump over a bottomless pit (as falling into it costs the player the entire run) or drop down to an obscured lower path containing a Tension Bonus item and a hidden Spring to launch the player back up to the main path. After this is a small bridge containing a Tension Bonus Item Box on the left-most end, though it will lead to a wall.
Next along the main path is five sets of spikes and an aerial bridge-like platform the player can jump to avoid the spikes. The end of this bridge conceals a hidden Spring to lead to an optional route; the Spring transports the player to another bridge platform containing a Tension Bonus item. A Spring at the end of this platform will launch the player to a higher section which by moving to the left eventually leads to a Maximum Tension Bonus though they will be placed in an earlier section of the course, making it not ideal for speedrunning the stage for Time Attack purposes.
Along the main path is a downhill slope with a hidden Spring just before a ledge leading straight to the Checkpoint Marker to finish the current lap.
