My Badnik forces will conquer the world. I will rule as its metallic overlord.

— Heavy King, Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Special

Heavy King[1] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing. He is the leader of the Hard Boiled Heavies, and an advanced Badnik created by Dr. Eggman to be the chief commander of his Badnik army.[1]

Heavy King is a humanoid robot decorated to resemble a mixture between a king and a knight, withs a red cape, signifying his rank among the other Hard Boiled Heavies as the leader. His appearance also bears a resemblance both the "Classic" and "Modern" incarnations of Dr. Eggman (having a cape similar to Classic, but having a chest plate resembling the jacket of Modern). The Heavy King possesses spiked knee joints and triangular shoulder pads along with red boots with golden forefeet. He also has bronze-colored armor-plating on his chest with a white crown symbol, gray appendages, and red and yellow eyes.[1]

At some point in the recent past, Heavy King was defeated, prompting Dr. Eggman to rebuild him with the intent of having him serve as his commander-in-chief so he could focus on other subjects. However, Heavy King began to become independent over time, and after having his attempt at attacking Eggman in his sleep thwarted by Metal Sonic, broadcasted an override signal which granted him full control of all the other Badniks. Heavy King then evicted his creator from his former fortress in Winter Caverns Zone, and sent out Metal Sonic, Metal Knuckles, Tails Doll, and several other Badnik models to find and retrieve the Chaos Emeralds for him so he could conquer the world and become its ruler, with the Hard Boiled Heavies serving as his generals.[1]

Seasons of Chaos

Heavy King remotely oversaw the progress of his Badniks toward their retrieval of the Chaos Emeralds through Tails Doll, and was pleased when both Metal Sonic and Metal Knuckles delivered the green and blue Chaos Emeralds to him, which he placed into sockets on his stage. A short while later, Metal Sonic and Metal Knuckles returned to Heavy King with the remaining Chaos Emeralds, which he also placed into the sockets on his stage, and used them to empower himself. However, he soon met resistance from Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Mighty, Ray, Fang, Bark, Bean, Eggman, and Metal Sonic and Metal Knuckles, both of whom Eggman had regained control over. Despite their efforts though, Heavy King managed to hold them back with the power of the Chaos Emeralds that he channled into energy attacks, stating his desire to rule the world with the Hard Boiled Heavies as his generals. The group continued to fight Heavy King, to no avail, prompting Sonic to formulate a plan to distract Heavy King while the others grabbed the Emeralds. Despite overhearing said plan, Heavy King fell for it due to his sheer pride and arrogance. With him no longer possessing the energy of the Emeralds, Sonic defeated the Heavy King with a powerful Spin Dash. Defeated, Heavy King pled for mercy to Eggman, who granted him another chance, on the condition that he would receive a software patch to prevent him overthrowing him again. Heavy King accepted, and grudgingly informed Eggman of the heroes' escape from the fortress, the majority of his Badnik army had being destroyed, and Metal Sonic and Metal Knuckles' lack of power, leaving Eggman with no means of retrieving the Chaos Emeralds. Annoyed, Eggman asked Heavy King to make him a grilled cheese sandwich, to which Heavy King replied "Apologies, sir. I am Heavy King. Not Heavy Chef".[1]

Dr. Eggman's Birthday

Heavy King in a meeting with Eggman, from Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Special.

In honor of Dr. Eggman's birthday, Heavy King, along with several other Badniks, launched an attack against Sonic the Hedgehog, only to be called off by Dr. Eggman himself, who ordered Heavy King and the other Badniks to return to his base. There, he lectured them about how they were unprepared to fight Sonic. Despite Heavy King feeling ashamed for his involvement in the attempted assault, he and the other Badniks still wished Dr. Eggman a happy birthday when Heavy King had the cake brought out.[2]

Heavy King is very arrogant, believing that no one can stop him and often boasting about his power and claiming to be “peak regal efficiency”. Heavy King is a power-hungry backstabber as well, betraying Dr. Eggman, taking control of his robots, and attempting to conquer the world himself, even claiming that Eggman programmed him to be deceitful and conquest-driven.[1]

For all his self-imposed grandure, Heavy King is shortsighted and very hotheaded, allowing Sonic to goad him into focusing all his attacks on him, despite hearing him say that was his plan mere moments before. Heavy King is also a coward and will humbly beg for mercy when he is defeated.[1]

Powers and abilities

Heavy King has the ability to absorb and manipulate energy, as shown during his battle with Sonic and his crew where he would absorb the energy from the Chaos Emeralds and then channel it through his scepter. He is also quite durable, being able to survive a direct Spin Dash without taking lasting damage.[1]

Heavy King possesses a powerful scepter that can fire lasers, project energy-based force-fields, launch energy bolts, attack with energy-fuled strikes, deploy energgy pylons, and conjure up energy spheres which Heavy King can control telekinetically. With the power provided by the Chaos Emeralds, these abilities were greatly amplified, to the point where he could overwhelm Sonic and several other powerful individuals at the same time.[1]

Dr. Eggman

Dr. Eggman is Heavy King's creator and master, who he currently serves as his commander-in-chief. Despite this, Heavy King previously took control of Eggman's robots and evicted him from his own base. However, following Eggman's installment of a software patch into Heavy King, he faithfully served Eggman, even being shown to celebrate his birthday.[1][2]
