I really think I could fight, and make a difference, but my parents won't let me.

— Hayward, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric

Hayward is a character that appears in the Sonic Boom series. He is an anthropomorphic gopher and a hopeless farmhand who lives on Seaside Island.[1] He dreams of becoming a hero, but is often held back by his chores on his family's farm.

Appearance[]

Hayward is an anthropomorphic gopher of average height with bright orange fur and light brown eyes. He has a round head with small triangular ears and peach inner ears, and the fur on his head is combed backwards. He also has white fur on much of his front torso and muzzle, and a black nose. His shoulders are rather small, giving his belly a slightly plump appearance. His attire consists of a red plaid vest buttoned on the middle, brown gloves with a metal plate on the backs and large cuffs, brown socks, and brown shoes with sprawled toplines.

In the comics, Hayward has purple fur, black eyes and dark peach skin on his muzzle, neck and front torso. His vest is also light yellow, his gloves are white, and his shoes are light yellow with white soles

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric[]

While digging in the field, Hayward found a Power Glyph, but had no idea what it was. Sometime later, Hayward saw Team Sonic fight Lyric, a sight that inspired him to join the resistance and defend the unnamed village from Lyric and Dr. Eggman. However, his parents would not let him, especially since robotic pests were infesting their crops, which could not be allowed so close to harvest.

Hayward soon after met Team Sonic and told about his dream and issues with his chores. Fortunately, Team Sonic helped him get rid of the pests. Hayward then thanked them for their help, now psyched about being able to join the resistance, and gave them his Power Glyph, hoping they could use it for something.

When the first annual Eggtoberfest was being held at Dr. Eggman's lair, Hayward was one of the villagers who attended this event.[2]

Personality[]

Hayward is a dreamer who constantly wants to go above and beyond to prove himself to others around him. Always looking to be a part of something bigger, something that makes a difference, he searches for a reason or way to help, just so he can show what he is able to do.[1]

Relationships[]

Family[]

As far as family ties go, Hayward is very obedient towards his parents and their decisions; despite having big dreams about going out and making a difference, he remained at the farm upon his parents' insistence to fulfill his chores.

Team Sonic[]

Hayward holds a great deal of admiration for Sonic, Tails, Knuckles (whom he finds ugly) and Amy of Team Sonic after seeing them fighting Lyric. Inspired by how big a difference they make, Haywards looks up to the team with an awe-struck attitude.

Quotes[]

"Oh boy, helloooo, it is you guys. I saw you guys earlier fighting Lyric. It was awwwwesome."
—Hayward, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric
"Ahh, you actually did it? You helped me out. Thank you so much. Now I can join the resistance and help defend the town from, and that fat, oval, pale guy."
—Hayward, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric

Trivia[]

  • The name "Hayward" is a pun on farming for hay.
  • Hayward is the first video game-exclusive character in the Sonic Boom franchise to appear in its comic series.
    • This contradicts an earlier mandate given to the writers of the comic series which prevents them from using characters from the video games.
