The Hammer Punch (ハンマーパンチ,Hanmāpanchi?) is a technique used primarily by Knuckles the Echidna and later by extension, Metal Sonic. When using this technique, the user throws a particularly powerful punch into the ground, creating wide tremors that can temporarily disable their opponent.
When performing the Hammer Punch, the user jumps into the air, raising their fist high above. The user then strikes the ground with an extremely powerful punch on the way down. This triggers a large earthquake throughout the area that the user is located in, be it the air or on the ground. The shakes from the tremors will then cause the opponents within the Hammer Punch's radius to lose their footing, leaving them disoriented or stunned.
Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
The Hammer Punch first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2 and its remake Sonic Adventure 2: Battle as one of Knuckles' special attacks. When performing the Hammer Punch, Knuckles shouts "Get down", before striking the ground. In gameplay, using the Hammer Punch triggers an earthquake throughout the area that affects the opposing opponents no matter where they are, which causes them to trip and be left dazed for a few seconds. If performed while climbing, the opponents will be knocked off the walls. If performed while the opponents are gliding or in the middle of a jump, it will have no effect.
The Hammer Punch is first used by Knuckles during the boss battle against him in the Dark story. Here, Knuckles will begin using it after his health has been reduced to half.
The Hammer Punch can only be performed by the player by playing as Knuckles in the games' two-player mode. To use it, the player must press // on the ground after collecting twenty Rings. To use it again, the player has to collect another twenty Rings.
The Hammer Punch returned in Sonic Rivals, although the execution of the move was illustrated in a far more powerful manner. In the game, it serves as Knuckles' Signature Move. In order for Knuckles to use the Hammer Punch, the player must first obtain a StarPower-Up which is located throughout the stage. The player then has to press to activate this move.
When Knuckles performs the Hammer Punch, he will strike the ground with such force that it triggers a wide eruption, with large columns of fire erupting from the general area of the punch's impact. The opposing rival will then be stunned in their tracks for a short amount of time, be it on the ground or in mid-air, regardless of where they would be located in the stage.
As with every other Signature Move in Sonic Rivals, Metal Sonic can perform this move when using his own Signature Move, Copycat, while racing against Knuckles.
In all of its appearances, the Hammer Punch can only be used when special conditions are fulfilled.
