— Gunther, "Fortress of Squalitude"

Gunther[2] is a character that appears in the Sonic Boom series. He is an anthropomorphic ferret who works as the assistant to Diane Aardvark at "Modern Lair Magazine" and Diane's own ad agency.[3][4]

Concept and creation[]

Gunther's redesign for the second season of the Sonic Boom television series supposedly came about when the staff wanted to differentiate him from Dixon, who shared an almost identical character model with Gunther.[5]

Appearance[]

Assistant profile

Gunther's design for season one.

Gunther is an anthropomorphic ferret of average height and slender build. He has light blue eyes, a long and slightly bushy tail, and oblique round ears on the sides of his head. His standard attire consists of a flat cap, a long-sleeved jacket, white gloves, and tall shoes with thick laces.

During the first season of Sonic Boom, Gunther had jasmine fur with old gold fur around his eyes, and light tan skin on his muzzle and chest. Also, his jacket was blue, his flat cap was a checkered blue and light-blue, and his shoes were red and white. He also wore rectangular glasses. For the second season, Gunther was given a significant redesign. Currently, he has completely amaranth pink fur and peach skin. Also, his flat cap is now teal, his jacket is now purple, and his shoes are now teal with purple laces. His glasses have also been switched out with a white scarf that has flannel-like red lines and three grey earrings which he wears on his left ear.

History[]

TV series[]

Season one[]

SB S1E06 Gunther Eggman lair lab

Gunther validating Eggman's lair.

Gunther was first seen dispatched by Modern Lair Magazine to Dr. Eggman's lair to determine whether or not the lair qualified to be in their issues. At first, Gunther was not pleased, deeming the lair too old-fashioned. Upon Dr. Eggman's insistent begging though, Gunther gave him one week to redecorate. When Gunther returned, he was impressed with the improvements made (courtesy of Amy Rose). Deeming the lair acceptable, Gunther promised to return with the photographer Diane Aardvark the next day. When they arrived however, they found the lair in utter ruin from Team Sonic. Stunned by this sight, Gunther was fired by Diane.[3]

At New Year's Eve, Gunther came to the New Year's Eve party held in the Village Center where he got to see Soar the Eagle at work and have a chat with Wolfie.[6] Eventually rehired, Gunther would help Diane with a photo shooting of Comedy Chimp which soon shifted focus to Knuckles.[7] Another time, Gunther came to the Robot Battle Royale, where he saw Eggman steal Tails' Hypnobot at the end.[8]

Season two[]

GuntherBurned

Gunther having his work taken by Knuckles.

While working at Diane's ad agency, Gunther was more than annoyed when Diane made Knuckles her creative executive. His criticism dismissed by Diane, Gunther would watch Knuckles get credit for his work. When taken to Meh Burger by Diane to celebrate their recent work though, Gunther got attacked by Knuckles while he tried handling other tasks, costing Knuckles his job.[4] Gunther later praised Tails as a hero when he seemingly proved Muckfoot's existence with a photo, and would take part in the ensuing Muckfoot Mania. However, he would scorn Tails when the fox showed that his "Muckfoot" was just Knuckles covered in mud.[9] As the Lightning Bowler Society then rose to stardom, Gunther would photograph their match with the Pin Dashers and following public appearance.[10] After this, Gunther found the time to go to Amy's anger management class.[11]

Personality[]

Speaking in a slight German accent, Gunther is pompous, smug and not easily impressed. He holds high standards for modern designs, meaning that something as simple as a Bunsen burner being just a couple of degrees off is enough to disgust him. While strict in his judgment, he is not unreasonable and will give others a second chance to impress him. He is very no-nonsense orientated and rather fearless, remaining unaffected by Eggman's threats or sweet-talk. For all his composure though, extremely shocking sights are enough to leave him absolutely stunned.[3]

Quotes[]

"Danger up the entryway a little, and who knows? You might make the cover."
—Gunther showing generosity to the owner of an impressive site, "Fortress of Squalitude"

Trivia[]

  • Dixon uses the same basic character model as Gunther. In fact, prior to Gunther's redesign, the only distinguishing feature between Gunther and Dixon was the color of their clothes and Dixon's ponytail.
  • Except for "Battle of the Boy Bands", Gunther and Diane Aardvark have always appeared in the same episode in the Sonic Boom television series.
  • Diane Aardvark's rehiring of Gunther following the events of "Fortress of Squalitude" has no in-universe explanation; because Sonic Boom had a limited budget for character design, it was decided by Bill Freiberger to just reinstate Gunther as Diane's assistant instead of making a new character to take his place.[12]
