The Guardian Units of Nations, abbreviated as G.U.N. or GUN, is a group that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series produced by Paramount Pictures and its spin-offs. It is a global task force devoted to protecting the Earth from extraterrestrial threats, though they have also worked against the threats posed by Dr. Robotnik.
Founded after the San Francisco incident, G.U.N. sought to capture Sonic the Hedgehog, having deemed him a threat to humanity. After executing Operation: Catfish to ensure the hedgehog's capture however, G.U.N. learned that Dr. Robotnik had returned to threaten mankind. When trying to stop the doctor however, they got out-match by the doctor's new power, leaving it to Sonic and his allies to stop him. Afterwards, G.U.N. would clean up the mess from Robotnik.

Sonic the Hedgehog[]
Guardian Units of Nations started out as a military shadow ops program, led by Dr. Robotnik. However, following the battle between Sonic and Robotnik, it was renamed and reorganized into a global task force designed to deal with any extraterrestrial threats to Earth, with Commander Walters put in charge of the organization.[1] After having failed to recruit Sonic for the United States and with Robotnik having disappeared from Earth, G.U.N. deemed Sonic an "uncontrollable extraterrestrial" and thus a threat to Earth. One team was sent to eliminate Robotnik's former associate, but managed to defeat them at the cost of being scarred before he went into hiding. In order to apprehend Sonic, G.U.N. enacted Operation: Catfish; by setting up a fabricated wedding between G.U.N.'s agent Randall and Rachel, Maddie Wachowski's sister and one of Sonic's human sympathizers, on Hawaii, G.U.N. planned to capture Sonic if he showed up with the Wachowskis.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2[]
At the wedding ceremony for Rachel and Randall on Hawaii, several G.U.N. agents would attend the fake wedding as guests of Randall, groomsmen, and even the priest overseeing the ceremony. When Sonic and Tails crashed the ceremony however, the G.U.N. agents dropped their cover and incapacitated Sonic, leading to Sonic and Tails' capture. Commander Walters also showed up and explained the story behind Operation: Catfish as the agents revealed their affiliation. At Walters' behest, Randall showed his G.U.N. badge as well, much to Rachel's indignation, who attempts to come at him, but was held back by the priest and another agent. As Tom Wachowski attacked the G.U.N. agents to save Sonic however, he was restrained by Randall and apprehended too. As Maddie tried defending Sonic, Walters turned a deaf ear and ordered the G.U.N. agents to guard Sonic, Tails, and Tom in the hotel until a helicopter could arrive. A scorned Rachel proceeded to demand answers from Walters, prompting him to reveal the purpose of G.U.N. During this exchange, Walters learned from Maddie about the probable return of Dr. Robotnik, who had been deemed dead since his disappearance. Walters thus contacted his agents to investigate the matter.
While G.U.N. agents patrolled the hotel, Rachel and Maddie armed themselves with Tails' gadgets and infiltrated the hotel. After dispatching an agent with an anti-gravity gadget, Maddie and Rachel split up, with Rachel going after Walters and Randall while Maddie went to rescue Sonic, Tom, and Tails. As G.U.N. surrounded Maddie when they discovered her intrusion however, Rachel saved Maddie by taking the agents out with another one of Tails' gadgets. As Rachel proceeded to confront Randall and Walters, the latter tried to stop her with a taser, only for Randall to take the shock for her. Walters would then surrender after Rachel displayed the power of Tails' laser gun to him. While Walters got bound and gagged however, Rachel reconciled with Randall after he confessed that his love for her was real. When everyone later spotted a pillar of green light from the Master Emerald far out to sea, Walters was convinced that Robotnik had returned and that both national and world security was at stake.
In Green Hills, Walters has hidden reinforcements sent to the Mean Bean Coffee Café, where Robotnik's new base was located, which was surrounded by G.U.N. armored vehicles by the time Walters himself arrived in a helicopter with Tom and Maddie to deal with the situation. There he got a status report from an agent, who revealed that Robotnik and Agent Stone were inside the café with Wade Whipple as a hostage. However, before any G.U.N. troops were able to make a move, Robotnik emerged from the café, transformed by the Master Emerald's power. In an attempt to make Robotnik surrender, Walters told him that the government had seized his lab, drones and funding. In response, Robotnik used the powers of the Master Emerald to disassemble and rip apart G.U.N.'s vehicles and arsenal to use as construction material to build his Giant Eggman Robot. Deprived of their equipment once the robot was completed, the G.U.N. infantry were ordered by Walters to retreat.
After Super Sonic defeated the Giant Eggman Robot, G.U.N. was no longer an enemy to Sonic. They would then shift through the wreckage in search of Robotnik but were unable to find any trace of the doctor, and Walters was convinced he could not have survived the robot's demise. What they did not realize, however, was that Agent Stone had survived and disguised himself as one of G.U.N.'s soldiers. An agent then revealed to Walters that they found something in their files as they were deleting Robotnik from their database; it was coordinates dating back fifty years that pinpointed a secret black site research facility, which Walters realized to his dread had something to do with Project Shadow.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3[]
G.U.N. is set to return and have a major yet larger role in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Infantry GUN soldiers wear full black combat gear, with the G.U.N. patch on their right sleeve, and the flag of the United States on the left sleeve. The insignia is on the left side of their flak jackets, and they wear tactical helmets, balaclavas, goggles, and combat boots. When not in combat, agents would wear black suits.
Trivia[]
- In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, one GUN chopper is labeled SA-2. This may be a reference to Sigma-Alpha 2, a group mentioned during the beginning of the Hero Story in Sonic Adventure 2 or perhaps the initials for the game itself.
- The GUN M1 Abrams appear to be visual modifications (VISMOD) of the Centurion tank. This can be seen by the tracks as they look identical to the Centurion. Canada was an operator of Centurion tanks at one point so it would be easy for the production crew to mockup some Canadian Centurions as GUN Abrams'. In the 1996 movie Courage Under Fire, visually modified Centurion tanks were used as movie stand-ins for M1 Abrams in the 1991 Gulf War.
- G.U.N. is known as the Planetary Patrol Union in the Hungarian dub of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Planetáris járőr unió).
