The Grind Shoes (グラインドシューズ, Guraindo Shūzu^?) are objects that appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are special shoes specifically made for grinding that were worn by Sonic the Hedgehog during the Space Colony ARK incident.

Concept and creation

The design of the Grind Shoes is based on the real-world Scorcher shoes from Soap, a brand that specialized in shoes made for the sport of grinding.

Description

Appearance

The Grind Shoes greatly resemble Sonic's shoes. Featuring more foot-shaped proportions and outlines, they are mostly red with tongues, solid white cuffs, and thin white straps with golden fasteners on each end over their middle. The outsoles are yellow, red and grey, highly detailed, and have a red recess below the in-steps. The rims on the front of the outsoles are white, while the heel rims are grey and the rims on the middle have yellow and white arches.

Features and abilities

Like Sonic's shoes, the Grind Shoes appear virtually friction-proof, showing no wear from being used to run at the speed of sound. In addition, they are specifically made for the grinding maneuver, thereby ensuring high-speed movements on Grind Rails.

Sonic Adventure 2

In Sonic Adventure 2 and its re-release Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, the Grind Shoes are worn by Sonic over the course of the entire game.

The Xbox 360 version of the 2012 re-release offers the Grind Shoes as an award for the Xbox Live Avatar, named "Sonic's 2G Hi-Speed Shoes". These can be unlocked by amassing a total in-game playtime of ten hours. The shoes sport a simplified design compared to their in-game counterparts.

Sonic Forces

In Sonic Forces, the Grind Shoes can be unlocked as a Costume item and be used to customize the Avatar. In this game, they come in three color schemes, one of which includes their regular colors with a the red being more with a orange hue.

Sonic Frontiers

In Sonic Frontiers, the Grind Shoes, referred to as the "Sonic Adventure 2 Shoes", returned as a DLC item for a limited-time promotion granted exclusively to players who subscribed to the Sonic Frontiers newsletter before January 31, 2023. On May 24, 2023, they became freely downloadable on Steam.

In Sonic Pinball Party, the Grind Shoes are seen in a sprite of Sonic that is based on an artwork from Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.

In the Sonic X anime series, the Grind Shoes were created by Christopher Thorndyke to give Sonic an advantage over his enemies when grinding.

Trivia

• Sonic was originally set to wear his standard shoes in Sonic Adventure 2, but they were replaced by the Grind Shoes late in development. Sonic can still be seen in his regular shoes instead of the Grind Shoes via certain oversights in the final game:
  • In the opening cutscene of the Hero Story, Sonic is seen in his regular shoes during the shot where he jumps out of the helicopter. This is corrected in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.
  • In the FMV cutscene following the Egg Golem battle of the Dark Story, Sonic is again seen in his regular shoes as runs to the shuttle. This is also corrected in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.
• In an early image released for Sonic Heroes, artwork of Sonic wearing the Grind Shoes from Sonic Adventure 2: Battle was used.
