Eventually, while Team Sonic were out on an errand to return some library books from the Green Hills library on behalf of Maddie, Sonic had them take a detour to the Green Hills Junkyard in order to investigate the strange noises coming from there. After arriving in the junkyard, Team Sonic discovered Unit uttering his objective as he continued to upgrade himself. Despite Sonic and Tails trying to stay out of sight, Knuckles' recklessness got them discovered by Unit, who took shots at Knuckles. As Sonic then attempted to formulate a plan of attack, Knuckles chose to just charge at Unit, only to get trapped in a refrigerator and ejected from the junkyard by Unit. With only Sonic and Tails left to take on Unit, Sonic would race around the junkyard while dodging Unit's lasers in order to gauge it. Eventually though, Sonic went on the offensive and got a few hits in on Unit until the Badnik blinded him with a loose component of his. Tails tried to help Sonic by shooting a bola at Unit, but Unit deflected the bola at Sonic, who got tied up. When the duo then tried to escape Unit, the Badnik managed to catch up to them and slam them into the ground. Unable to fight Unit now, Sonic took Tails' advice and tried talking with Unit. Through their conversation, Sonic convinced the Badnik to pursue his own passion: poetry. Receiving then some encouragement from both Sonic and Tails, Unit would read out his own poems for the duo to listen to for a while. However, Knuckles eventually returned and smashed Unit's body with an ambush. After Sonic and Tails convinced Knuckles to stop, Tails found Unit's core module, which was still intact. Tails then convinced his team to adopt Unit, although both Sonic and Knuckles had reservations about this, with Sonic stressing that Unit was Tails' responsibility and Knuckles suspecting that Unit was still evil. Afterwards, Team Sonic and Unit left the junkyard for their next adventure: getting chili dog on the way home.
