Gnarly Knuckles (ナーリー[1] Nārī?), also known simply as Gnarly, is a character that appears in the Sonic Prime television series. He is an anthropomorphic echidna who is the Boscage Maze counterpart of Knuckles who is part of the Scavengers to help protect the forest. He is also the only counterpart who hasn’t learned the Spin Dash from Sonic.
Appearance[]
Gnarly is a doppelgänger of his mainstream counterpart. As such, he is an anthropomorphic echidna with red fur that covers most of his body, a black nose on his peach-skinned muzzle, a white crescent-shaped patch of fur on his chest, and purple eyes. He also has seven dreadlock-like spines around the sides and back of his head and a medium-sized, tri-crooked tail.
For attire, Gnarly wears a hat made of leaves that is held together by rope. His gloves are yellowish in color, with the typical spikes found on his mainline counterpart's gloves instead being made of plant thorns. His shoes are made of leafage. He has dark red tribal tattoos on his forehead, cheeks, legs, tail, around his eyes and dreads. He also has bracelets decorating his dreads as well as a wooden necklace around his neck.
History[]
TV series[]
Past[]
Some time prior to Sonic's arrival in the Boscage Maze, Gnarly and the other Scavengers had been in conflict with Thorn Rose over dominion over the jungle floor and access to its resources.
Season one[]
Gnarly was first seen being flung skyward, only for Sonic to run into him and his fellow Scavengers, after which they attacked Sonic thinking, he was there to steal their supplies. Eventually calming down, Sonic explained his situation to the Scavengers, and Gnarly followed the others around as Prim explained their situation to Sonic. Soon, Gnarly got in a fight with Mangey and Hangry over the only berry they have to eat, with Sonic breaking up their fight and promising them he can get them more berries. Gnarly and the other Scavengers, alongside Sonic, soon descended down to the jungle floor in order to scavenge for supplies and while Sonic dealt with the monster. Eventually, the monster attacked, taking out Gnarly and the others one by one, causing Gnarly and his friends to retreat back to the treetops. After a while, Gnarly and the others go down again. After Sonic makes Thorn sees the damege she caused to the jungle, she apologizes to her friends. Gnarly and the others also apologize to her. The Scavengers are finally reunited and in peace again.
Season two[]
When the Council attacks Boscage Maze, Thorn tells her friends to help her in the fight. Gnarly is too scared, and thinks the Council might be there to eat them. Thorn and Sonic go to the fight on their own, while the others stay back. Eventually, Gnarly and the others decide to go down the jungle and assist their friends, fighting some Eggforcers.
Season three[]
When the shatterspaces start to collapse, at some point Gnarly went into New Yoke. There, he assists the others in making sure the citizens are safe. When Sonic goes to the Grim to speak with Nine, Gnarly and all his other friends arrive for help. They engage in a fierce battle against Nine's Grim robots. Gnarly follows Rebel orders, and he tries to sneak to the top of Nine's tower alongside Prim and Hangry. At one point, Gnarly suggest using a time machine, which weirdes out Prim. The team works well together but they are eventually discovered by Nine. Some time later at the end of the war, Gnarly and the rest break into Nine's lab to confront him one last time.
Personality[]
Gnarly possesses all of Knuckles' distrust of anything strange, drained of his common sense to the level of being completely paranoid. He instantly accuses Sonic of coming to steal supplies when they first meet, and even after they stop fighting him, remains suspicious. He is even suspicious of the environment around him, accusing the trees of talking and listening. He is stubborn too, since Prim has repeatedly tried to convince him otherwise, and failed.
Gnarly is quick to rush to attack, and the other Scavengers follow him into battle, and when he agrees to follow Sonic's lead, they do not argue with him, showing that he has some natural leadership skills. However, he never seems to think before acting.
Powers and abilities[]
Gnarly can throw a spear with great precision, though he is also capable of fighting using his fists.
Weapons[]
Gnarly utilizes a spear in combat.
