The giant spear[1] is an obstacle that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are silver spears that can damage the playable characters by piercing them.

Description[]

Much like Spikes, classic giant spears are metal poles with sharp points that emerge from holes on the ground, walls or ceilings. Such spears often protrude and retract in intervals. Occasionally, giant spears are also thrown or shot at pathways by unknown sources. Common to both these types of spear is that they can damage the player should their points hit the playable characters (even after the giant spears have embedded in a surface).

Game appearances[]

Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)[]

In the 16-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), giant spears emerging from surfaces appear in the underwater segments of Labyrinth Zone and Scrap Brain Zone Act 3. There, they are often encountered in narrow passageways, where the underwater physics makes dodging them difficult. They also line the walls of the passageway for the fight against the Egg Mobile, where they slow Sonic down while the water rises below.

In the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), giant spears emerging from surfaces also appear in Labyrinth Zone. Like its 16-bit counterpart, they are encountered in narrow underwater sections.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2[]

8-bit[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit), giant spears emerging from surfaces appear in the narrow underwater sections of Aqua Lake Zone. Here, they function like in the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog (1991). There are also giant spear variants that are fired sideways in tall corridor sections which the player has to avoid while riding air bubbles.

16-bit[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit), the Metropolis Zone features boxes with spears that protrude from each side in intervals. They are often encountered in large numbers, forcing the player to carefully time their jumps to avoid them. Regular giant spears also hide along long diagonal paths in this Zone. Here, they protrude in a Mexican wave style pattern as the player lands on the terrain.

SegaSonic the Hedgehog[]

In SegaSonic the Hedgehog, giant spears protruding from the ground appear in Icy Isle. Here, the player has to avoid them on slippery ice tracks. Touching the giant spears while they are raised does not hurt the playable characters, but they will hurt them if the characters are standing above their points as they protrude.

Sonic Chaos[]

In Sonic Chaos, giant spears serve as obstacles by emerging from surfaces in Aqua Planet Zone. They work like in previous games and appear either in narrow underwater sections or in more open sections below blocky platforms.

Sonic 3D Blast[]

In Sonic 3D Blast, giant spears appear in Spring Stadium Zone, where they hide in groups of two or four inside holes from where they will rise up from when Sonic stands on such holes. In both the Sega Saturn version and PC version of the game, these spears are purple, but the holes which they pop up from are harder to notice due the darker color scheme of the floor tiles.

In Spring Stadium Zone, there are also giant spears blocking pathways in front of Dimension Rings. These are grouped in three, and when the player gathers enough Flickies into the Dimension Ring, these giant spears will retract.

Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure, giant spears are featured in Gigantic Angel Zone, where they protrude from boxes at certain intervals. These boxes must be climbed to reach certain areas, so the player must time their movements carefully as to not get hurt.

Sonic Storybook Series[]

Sonic and the Secret Rings[]

In Sonic and the Secret Rings, giant spears are some of the exclusive obstacles in Sand Oasis. Here, they are thrown at Sonic as he moves down the paths.

Sonic Unleashed[]

In the Wii/PlayStation 2 version of Sonic Unleashed, giant spears appear as one of the exclusive obstacles encountered during the daytime Acts of Dragon Road. Here, they are thrown at Sonic as he moves down narrow, curving pathways, much like in Sonic and the Secret Rings.

Sonic and the Black Knight[]

In Sonic and the Black Knight, giant spears appear during the "Special Challenge: Open all locks" in Titanic Plain, where they are thrown at Sonic from the giant wagons pulled by Trolls.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I, giant spears emerging from surfaces appear in Lost Labyrinth Zone. Here, they behave much like they did in the original Sonic the Hedgehog. During the first phase of the fight against the Egg Mobile, giant spears are also found on the pathway, while the water is rising below.

Sonic Mania[]

In Sonic Mania and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, giant spears are featured in Hydrocity Zone.
