- This article is about the species. For other uses, see Ghost (disambiguation).
Ghosts are creatures that appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are a supernatural breed of spirits that roam several regions of the earth.
Description[]
Anatomy[]
Ghosts generally have a pale, white complexion, and a translucent appearance, though their color and level of translucency can vary. Ghosts can vary in appearances, ranging from looking very humanoid to being nothing more than floating heads with arms and tails. One of the best-defined physical characteristics of ghosts is their lack of legs, which is present in almost all members of their species, including the Mimic Ghost (even after it transformed into Sonic/Tails) and the Pumpkin Ghosts despite how vastly different its anatomy is. However, there are a few ghosts who possess legs, such as Antonio and Renzo.
Characteristics and culture[]
While the nature of ghosts is unclear, it was once implied that ghosts are the spirits of those who have passed away, though given how vastly different Renzo and Antonio are in comparison to other ghosts in the series, this may not be the case. It may also be that the term "ghost" refers to two separate creatures, with one referring to spiritual creatures such as King Boom Boo while the other refers to the spirits of dead creatures such as Antonio.
Most ghosts seem to have a mischievous and downright childish personality, as they appear to enjoy playing pranks on others. This is exemplified by Lah, who spends most of her time laughing at the pictures of scared children. Also, ghosts like the Boos like to scare others, particularly phasmophobic individuals like Tails, despite their otherwise docile behavior.[1] Pumpkin Ghosts are another example of the ghosts' prankster behavior, as they will suddenly appear, simply stand in place and laugh before disappearing. With that said, however, some ghosts, like the Hyudoros, are highly hostile to outsiders, and will attack when given the chance.
Almost nothing is known about the general culture of the various breeds of ghosts, though it has been speculated that the hourglass is a highly important item for the Boos specifically.[1] Ghosts appear to enjoy inhabiting abandoned areas, such as deserts, empty mansions, and graveyards, which is a direct parallel to certain beliefs about where ghosts live.
Powers and abilities[]
Ghosts share a handful of similar powers, which include levitation, turning invisible, and intangibility, though some members possess powers unique to themselves. For example, King Boom Boo can breathe blue flames and throw blue fireballs, Su and Uh can fuse with each another to become one superstrong ghost, and the Mimic Ghost can copy other people's powers.
Ghosts have the ability to merge with walls and floors, as demonstrated by King Boom Boo, Su, and Uh. Some ghosts, such as Lah and the Mimic Ghost, have also shown the ability to shapeshift at will, taking on the forms of other beings.
Ghosts can possess anyone by phasing into their bodies, allowing them to take full control of their bodies.
Some ghosts, like King Boom Boo and the Hyudoros, are weak to light, which is why they reside in dark, indoor areas (such as Aquatic Mine and the pyramids of Sandopolis) and only come out at night and sunset when there is reduced sunlight.
In other media[]
Animation[]
Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog[]
In the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog television series, ghosts exist. One in particular was summoned by Coconuts with a Ghost-Conjuring Kit to scare Sonic. However, the ghost turned out to be a fan of Sonic's, and instead asked for his autograph. The ghost then scared Scratch and Grounder when Sonic asked him to.
Sonic Underground[]
In the Sonic Underground television series, there exists a ghost named Aman-Rapi. Anan-Rapi was an ancestor of Queen Aleena and the royal hedgehog triplets who lived in a pyramid in Hamarapi in ancient times as a sorcerer and prophet. His spirit still inhabits his pyramid in the present.
Sonic X[]
In the Sonic X anime series and its comic book spin-off published by Archie Comics, Booms, Boom Boos, and King Boom Boo are natural ghostly inhabitants of Earth rather than Sonic's world. They dwell within a pocket dimension in an abandoned castle and are released from their sleep when the Talisman is removed. Another ghost, known as Captain MacGuffin, is the spirit of a deceased pirate.
Comics[]
Archie Comics[]
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, ghosts like the Hyudoros reside on Sonic's World. Knuckles has explained that ghosts are either vapor or solid. If they want to touch anything, they have to turn tangible, which is when they are vulnerable to harm.
Sonic the Comic[]
In the Sonic the Comic series published by Fleetway Editions, there are Hyudoros whose characteristics and abilities parallel their game counterparts. Two other ghosts who were formerly living beings also appear in this series, namely Filch and the Spirit of the Herd.
