Doctor Gerald Robotnik[1][2] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series and its spin-offs produced by Paramount Pictures. He is the grandfather of Ivo Robotnik.

Appearance[]

Gerald bears a resemblance to his grandson. He is bald (with notable liver spots), overweight (much like his grandson's new state), has sunken eyes, slightly bushy white eyebrows and a long white mustache. His attire includes a white scientist robe coat with an ID card hanging on the chest pocket and a black shirt on the inside. He also wears a small pair of pince-nez glasses. He also wears a watch on his left wrist.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike Gerald's video game counterpart, he appears to still be alive in the present.
    • This would make him also the first incarnation of Gerald in general to still be alive.
    • This is also the first and currently only official incarnation of Gerald to meet his grandson, Ivo.
    • This is the first and currently only official version of the character to have visible eyes, whereas his own eyes are never revealed behind his dark glasses in other media.
    • Coincidentally enough, the official trailer of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released on 27 August 2024, just one day after Tatá Guarnieri's seventieth birthday, the Brazilian voice of Gerald's movie counterpart.
  • Despite referring to Ivo as his grandson in the known canon, in its Greek and Polish dub he refers to him as his son, possibly because of "Pop-pop" sounding like "Papa". Though this is just a trailer, so the translation might be corrected in the final version.[3]
    • According to X user Sergi_ND, who worked on Sonic the Hedgehog 3[4], Gerald is Robotnik's grandfather instead of his dad like many people think.
  • Luís Barros, the Portuguese voice actor of Gerald, previously voiced Bocoe, Espio the Chameleon, Mr. Tanaka, Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Sonic, and Dark Sonic in the Biggs dub of Sonic X, and Dr. Babble, Dr. Deep, Dr. Done-It, Dr. Don't, Eggman, and Mr. Dr. Eggman in Sonic Prime.
  • Unlike his game counterpart, his Pince-nez glasses are not tinted and blue. Although his grandson Ivo doesn't wear glasses like he does in usual media, and instead only wears a pair of goggles.
  • Tatá Guarnieri, the Brazilian Portuguese voice actor of Gerald, voiced Sonic the Hedgehog in "Sonic Christmas Blast", Sonic the Hedgehog in the Brazilian Portugese VHS dub of Sonic SatAM, Sonic the Hedgehog in the VHS dub of Sonic Underground, and Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series.
