Gerald's Lab is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It served as Gerald Robotnik’s primary research space during his work on Project Shadow aboard the Space Colony ARK.[1]
Description[]
Appearance[]
Gerald's Lab was once a room that was filled with highly advanced machinery, with monitors and panels all around. In the center was Shadow's pod that was used during his creation and eventual awakening.
Years later, and long after the raid, the room is now mostly empty, and it is damaged as well. Only Shadow's abandoned pod remains completely intact.
History[]
Creating the Ultimate Lifeform[]
Maria Robotnik was diagnosed with a terminal illness known as Neuro-Immune Deficiency Syndrome (N.I.D.S.). In a desperate attempt to save her, her grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, began research on immortality after being pressured into doing so by the United Federation. His research would eventually lead into developing the "Ultimate Lifeform" as part of the government's broader immortality project, dubbed "Project Shadow". The first prototype, the Biolizard, unfortunately experienced accelerated cellular growth, to the point where it couldn’t support its own biological systems and a life-support system needed to be made for it. Shorty after, the creature was deemed too unstable and uncontrollable, forcing Gerald to imprison it in the Central Dome of the ARK.[2]
As research on the project continued, Gerald established contact with an alien warlord called Black Doom, the leader of the Black Arms. Black Doom aided Gerald’s research, even providing his own DNA for the project. Together, they created Shadow, the Ultimate Lifeform. Though Shadow was meant to further Gerald’s research, Black Doom’s true goal was to create an agent who could one day retrieve the Chaos Emeralds for his future invasion of Earth. A young Abraham Tower was among those who witnessed these events unfold.[3]
It was during this time that Gerald discovered a Gizoid named Emerl and began studying it aboard the ARK. However, after the government insisted on more weapons research, Gerald was forced to hand Emerl over to them. The Gizoid, overloaded with weapons data, went on a destructive rampage. It took Gerald hostage in his own lab, but fortunately, Shadow arrived just in time and managed to subdue Emerl.[4]
The lab, like the rest of the ARK, was eventually abandoned and shut down following a raid by the Guardian Units of Nations. The facility was shut down following a rampage by the experimental Artificial Chaos, which had been triggered as a result of Emerl's attack onboard the ARK.
Present Day[]
During the events of Shadow Generations, Shadow briefly returns to the now-destroyed and abandoned lab, reflecting on the day he was first awakened.
