Ged Wright is the visual effects supervisor of the Sonic the Hedgehog film series produced by Paramount Pictures. He is also a director of the Knuckles TV series.

Ged Wright has had 15 years of experience supervising large-scale effects simulation and creature shows. His visual effects background began with his co-founding of Psycho Graphics, where he worked on a range of commercials, 3D rides and television identities. He was also an Assistant Lecturer for Murdoch University and helped set up a digital design and media lab. Wright began working as a visual effects supervisor in Marc Forster’s Quantum of Solace, which received a British Academy Film Awards nomination for Best Special Visual Effects. Previously, he contributed to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as Lead Visual Effects Artist, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as a Visual Effects Artist, both BAFTA nominees for Best Special Visual Effects. Notably, Wright oversaw the visual effects on Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Achievement in Visual Effects.[1]

In May of 2018, Jeff Fowler approached Ged Wright to work on Sonic the Hedgehog. The meeting went well and the film crew wanted Wright to be a part of the project. Jeff wanted the visual effect to feel like an integrated part of Sonic's world & not something that was distracting or took the audience out of the experience. Wirght worked on the film for 18 months and his team worked on 1300 shots. Wright has expressed one of the key challenges was how to turn over visual effects shots inside a fairly tight schedule & not have too much wasted work. He clarified the primary focus was "putting a version of Sonic into the movie".[2]

Translating the Sonic design into a 3D character was a challenging process. We certainly tried a lot of things as a group, some of which were more successful that others. I feel that all of this development contributed to the end result and final design & while it may not be directly translatable was a part of the process. For instance the fur shading which we developed for a more real world Sonic was directly useable on the more stylized Sonic. Along with a number of other things this all contributed to making the actual redesign process a fairly painless process.

Wright indicated they were "near the beginning of the primary animation phase and shot production" when they had to redesign Sonic. He notes the design Tyson Hesse wanted was straightforward. He and Jeff took time to fly to Vancouver and meet with the artists doing the work to raise morale. Wright said he was pleased the reception of the film after its release, saying it shows the "commitment and passion from everyone involved". Ged Wright returned as the visual effects supervisor for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and is a director for the Knuckles TV series.[2]
