That contraption is a Gear Switch! While you're on a Gear Platform, move below the switch and hit it!

Omochao, Sonic Generations (console/PC)[1]

The Gear Platform[1] is a gimmick that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a large gear that can be used by the Pink Spikes to trigger special Gear Switches.

Description[]

The Gear Platforms are large black and silver gears with sharp teeth, pink-glowing segments and the Pink Spikes' symbol emblazoned in their center. They come in two different sizes and float in midair.

Overview[]

Gear Platform Pink Spikes

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, the Gear Platforms are only encountered in Planet Wisp Act 1. In gameplay, they can be used to open new paths. By touching a Gear Platform as the Pink Spikes, the player will automatically get on top of them where they can roll along it, causing the Gear Platform to move along a string behind it. Sometimes, when reaching the end of this string, the Pink Spikes will rub against a special switch, resembling a quarter-circle of the Gear Platforms, and make them flip over. This will trigger reaction in the environment that opens a gate blocking the path or forms an alternate path which the player can use to proceed with the Act.

The Gear Platforms mostly serve as in-game puzzles the player must solve to proceed. Should the player jump off a Gear Platform or revert back to normal from the Pink Spikes while in the middle of moving it, the Gear Platform will move back into its starting position. The player can also increase its speed by using the Spin Dash on it.
