The Gaia Phoenix,[2] formerly known as the Dark Gaia Phoenix,[3] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. It is the phoenix spirit that guards the Gaia Temple near Chun-Nan.

History[]

Past[]

The Gaia Phoenix is one of the few powerful spirits that reside on Sonic's World.[2] As the protector of Chun-Nan, it had been guarding the local Gaia Temple from the Egg Clan Army, preventing them from claiming the area. The Gaia Key Guardian, Zonshen, frequently visited the temple to take the care of the spirit and made offerings to it, establishing a friendship with the Gaia Phoenix.[1]

Shattered World Crisis[]

Act Two[]

Gaia Phoenix

The Dark Gaia Phoenix, from Sonic the Hedgehog #281.

During the Shattered World Crisis, the phoenix was exposed to Dark Gaia energy, corrupting it and causing it to become berserk during the night. During these events, Zonshen encroached upon the Gaia Phoenix as it became the Dark Gaia Phoenix, where it took its former friend prisoner.[1]

ZonnyandPhoney

The Gaia Phoenix and Zonshen oversee the restoration of the world, from Sonic the Hedgehog #287.

Sonic the Werehog and Chip infiltrated the temple to rescue Zonshen, but incurred the fury of the corrupted Phoenix. As the Egg Clan descended upon the temple, Sonic fought the dark spirit, using water to weaken it into submission. After the Dark Gaia Phoenix's flames were quelled, Chip was able to purify the spirit. Having returned to its normal form, the Gaia Phoenix resumed its protector role and incinerated the Egg Clan's base, forcing the Egg Clan into retreat.[4] Later, the Gaia Phoenix would witness the local Gaia Temple rise up out of its position.[5] Soon on, it would oversee the restoration of the world with Zonshen.[6]

Powers and abilities[]

The Gaia Phoenix possesses pyrokinetic powers that allow it to both envelop itself and generate flames over a wide area. It can additionally launch its own feathers like arrows with enough power to decimate the entire Egg Clan Army's base. Due to its size, it also has increased strength and durability.[4]

Weakness[]

The Gaia Phoenix is vulnerable to water, as dowsing it in water weakens it considerably.[4]
