The Gaia Keys[1] are objects appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. They are a set of ancient keys needed to access the inner chambers of the various Gaia Temples from the Gaia Gate in Apotos. Each key consists of two halves protected by a Gaia Key Guardian: a Sun Key and a Moon Key.

Gaia Key Archie

Gregorios exposits on the Gaia Keys, from Sonic the Hedgehog #272.

For an unknown amount of time, the Gaia Keys have been safeguarded by a group of protectors who kept their task a closely guarded secret. However, their identities were made known to Gregorios, keeper of the Gaia Gate, who likewise safeguarded this information.[2]

Shattered World Crisis

During the Shattered World Crisis, Gregorios came chose to break silence and warn his colleagues after Metal Sonic attacked him looking for information on the temples.[3] He also shared a list of the Gaia Key Guardians with the Freedom Fighters to enable them to gather the keys and thus access the temples and restore the world.[2] The Freedom Fighters were able to gather all of the keys and had them stored alongside the Chaos Emeralds within Castle Acorn's vaults.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] However, under the orders of Dr. Eggman, the Keys were stolen in a raid conducted by the Hooligans, the Witchcarters and Metal Sonic.[12] The Gaia Keys were then delivered to Eggman in Apotos, where he found the Gaia Gate. They entrances to each Gaia Temple was then opened by Eggman's Egg SWATs with the Keys so that they could place the Emeralds on their respective podiums.[13]
