Froggy (カエルくん Kaeru-kun?) is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is the pet frog and best friend of Big the Cat, though he has a habit of running off on his own, leaving Big to set off each time to find him.

Froggy is a non-anthropomorphic green frog with a round body and four limbs. His limbs are rather thin, and each one has webbed feet with two toes each. He also has a white underbelly, orange stripes around his body, and red dots on his cheeks. He also has medium-large eyes with pale yellow sclera and wide black pupils.

After drinking Chaos' essence, Froggy gained a tail with a triangular tip. He supposedly lost it after Chaos' essence was returned to it, though it has made several reappearances in subsequent games.

Years ago,[1] Froggy met Big and became his pet and best friend.

Sonic Adventure

In Sonic Adventure, its enhanced port Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, and the 2010 remaster, Froggy swallowed both a part of Chaos and a Chaos Emerald. Abducted by E-102 Gamma, Froggy was taken to the Egg Carrier as Dr. Eggman wanted the Emerald and the Chaos piece inside him. Big pursued him, and recovered his friend. However, the Chaos Emerald and the part of Chaos he had swallowed were absorbed into Chaos, allowing it to become Chaos 6, but was eventually rescued by Big with the aid of Sonic. Big and Froggy then took the Tornado 2 back to Mystic Ruins.

Sonic Heroes

In Sonic Heroes, Froggy and Chocola, Cheese's twin, were abducted. Big, Amy and Cream went to look for them under the impression that Sonic had taken them. During the adventure they instead figured out that Eggman had kidnapped Froggy and Chocola, and defeated him. However, it turned out that Metal Sonic had framed Eggman, and had kidnapped Froggy and the Chao in order to copy the residual data of Chaos. Froggy was not seen in the final scenes of the game, but it can be assumed that he and Big went back to Mystic Ruins.

Sonic Colors

In the Nintendo DS version of Sonic Colors, Froggy ran off on his own once more and supposedly made his way to Aquarium Park in Dr. Eggman's Incredible Interstellar Amusement Park. Hot on Froggy's trail, Big followed him to Aquarium Park, where he looked for him. There, Big met Sonic and Tails and got Sonic to look for Froggy, but without results. Sonic, however, suggested that Froggy could already have gone home by then.

Other game appearances

Sonic Adventure 2

In Sonic Adventure 2, Froggy appears as a part of the Eggwalker while Big is piloting it in a multiplayer mode. He replaces the glove used by Eggman as a close attack weapon. For an unknown reason, Froggy possesses Chaos' tail.

In Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Froggy makes a cameo as Giant Froggy, Big's All-Star Move. After Froggy hops onto Big's head, he suddenly turns into Giant Froggy.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood

In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Froggy appears in two of Big's POW moves, Froggy Rain and Froggy Poison. In an optional mission, it is revealed that Froggy has a friend named Norton the Frog, whom he had not seen in a while. In the process of trying to find Norton, the team comes across his other friends, Gally, Mr. Billywick, and Mrs. Stevens.

In the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Froggy makes an appearance in the game's story mode. In this mode, he came to London with Big, but eventually went missing. Big later found him at Stonehenge and took him to the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

Sonic Runners

In Sonic Runners, Froggy made a few appearances during exclusive Events. During the "Birthday on Windy Hill" event, Froggy came to Sonic's birthday party with Team Rose, where they got kidnapped by Dr. Eggman when he trashed the celebration with his miniature Death Eggs. Thankfully, Sonic showed up in time to free Froggy and Team Rose (except for Amy who got away), and the group returned to celebrate Sonic's birthday after Sonic got rid of Eggman.

During the "Tropical Coast Event", Froggy accompanied Team Rose to a beach resort. Amidst their relaxation, the group met Team Sonic. Once Team Rose learned of Eggman's most recent scheme, Froggy came along with Team Rose when they decided to help Team Sonic stop Eggman.

Aside from those Events, Froggy is also mentioned in Big's character profile.

Sonic Forces: Speed Battle

Froggy, from Sonic Forces: Speed Battle.

In Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, Froggy can appear at the end of the finish line of each race if at least one player is playing as Big.

Team Sonic Racing

In Team Sonic Racing, Froggy does not appear physically. However, Big's racing car, the Frog Cruiser, is designed after Froggy. He is also mentioned by Big.

While unable to express himself vocally, Froggy has shown other ways to define himself: one of which is Froggy's rather bad habit of running off on his own, leaving his best friend to chase after him. When reunited with Big, Froggy appears to be content with returning to his home at the Mystic Ruins.

Archie Comics

Froggy, from Sonic the Hedgehog #213.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Froggy is a mobini frog and the best friend of Big from País Misterioso. When Froggy drank a little of the water from Chaos, he was captured by Dr. Eggman and used to restore Chaos, but was rescued by Big. Froggy has since accompanied Big on many of his adventures with the Knothole Freedom Fighters.

After the Super Genesis Wave re-wrote history, Froggy's history became nearly identical to his game counterpart's.

After the Eggman War, Froggy went missing, prompting Big to got on a search for him. Eventually, Big found him near Spiral Hill Village. Afterward, Froggy and Big encountered some Zombots, who would end up infecting them both, turning them in Zombots as well. They soon after ended up on Angel Island, where they were restored to normal. Shortly thereafter however, Froggy went missing again.

Sonic X

In Sonic X, like in the games, Froggy is a frog and the best friend of Big. Originally, Froggy lived on a parallel Earth in an alternate dimension, but was sent to Earth due to Chaos Control. While living there, Froggy accidentally drank some of Chaos and was captured by Dr. Eggman, but was eventually freed from Eggman and Chaos with the help of Sonic and his friends.

  • In the Frog Forest stage from Sonic Heroes, if the player stands idle for long enough as Team Rose, Big will wonder if that is where Froggy originates from.
  • Froggy is one of only four minor characters to have his own toy, the others being a neutral Chao, Cheese and Kiki.
  • Froggy has had both orange stripes and dark green stripes on his body. It seems he has green stripes in art and orange stripes in-game.
  • In Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Froggy is shown to still possess Chaos' tail.
  • Froggy is not present with Big during the Perfect Chaos battle, implying that they can still be separated temporarily, similar to how Birdie and its gray sibling did not show up but the pink bird which was housed in E-102 Gamma did.

Froggy, from LEGO Dimensions.

  • In LEGO Dimensions, Froggy appears as part of Big's quest in the Sonic the Hedgehog Adventure World, titled "Big's Big Fishing Adventure 4". Big tasks the player with chasing Froggy throughout the adventure world, eventually cornering him in Carnival Night Zone. Froggy also makes a cameo in the Sonic Dimensions level, where he hops out of a portal during one of the cutscenes.
