"Friend or Foe?" is the sixteenth episode of the Sonic Underground television series and is a loose adaption of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. It first aired on 28 February 1999 in France and on 20 September 1999 in the United States. It was included in Volume 1 and Secrets of the Chaos Emerald.

Plot[]
The Hedgehogs converge on the Floating Island, in their latest attempt to find their Mother. Sleet and Dingo also have an interest in this island that involves the Chaos Emerald, which is the island's life-force. But, before either party can achieve their goals, they have to get through Knuckles, the floating island's stern guardian. Knuckles is even skeptical of Sonic's motives, although he can see right through Sleet and Dingo. Once the Hedgehogs convince Knuckles they are friendly and mean no harm to his island, they help Knuckles in protecting his exotic home and the emerald.

- This marks the first animated depiction of Knuckles
Differences from Sonic the Hedgehog 3[]
Given the episode is a very loose adaption of the game, multiple differences in terms of plot have been made.
- Tails, who was in the original plot as Sonic's sidekick, is removed due to the series not including him.
- In the game, Robotnik found the island when his Death Egg crashed unto the island after Sonic destroyed it. Afterwards, he would meet Knuckles and trick him saying Sonic was after the Master Emerald. Here, Robotnik found the island through unexplained means and doesn't visit the island, instead sending Sleet and Dingo to investigate the island, who becomes the ones to trick Knuckles.
- In addition, in the game Robotnik tricked Knuckles through lying to him via his words whereas here, Sleet and Dingo use a projector to trick Knuckles.
- In the game, Knuckles would set off multiple traps across various Zones Sonic and Tails traveled before the duo clashed with Knuckles in Hidden Palace Zone. Here, Knuckles only sets off a few traps in the jungle biome on the island and he and Sonic would have their clash above ground.
