1990[]

  • April 1: A contest is organized to create a mascot/character intended to prove the capabilities of the Sega Mega Drive to compete in the video game market. The proposals were various (a bulldog, an all-American wolf, an armadillo, a rabbit, a kangaroo, and even a fat, mustache man in pajamas). A hedgehog was seemingly universally approved of and would proudly display his name, "Sonic the Hedgehog", for the entire franchise. Chosen as the mascot for Sega, he uses the company’s color as his own and Sega would focus on his speed to market the Sega Mega Drive's processing power. Studio AM8 of Sega starts to work on Sonic the Hedgehog and is renamed "Sonic TEAM". While the playable character was set for his design that communicates the gameplay, Sonic Team was very fond of the jolly, round, mustache man in pajamas and would re-designed him as the main villain of the Sonic the Hedgehog series as Doctor Eggman, referred to as Dr. Robotnik in the West and later by both names, to be the challenge and threaten the player with Game Overs throughout the game. The armadillo would be reused as Mighty the Armadillo.
