Result: The Sonic News Network will not have an independent website at this time.
Hello there. I'm sure there has been some sort of forum about moving Sonic News Network into an individual website. And I'm pretty sure that we haven't gotten to be our own website, but instead a wiki. Now, I'm here to revamp that idea; I believe we should expand to an individual website.. We should first give out our own opinions about this. But, let's be a little bit aware; since if we move to a website, won't all of the pages be deleted? If so, we need to be a little bit aware about this. I want to here from your opinions about this. BlueSpeeder (talk) 21:42, August 16, 2013 (UTC)
Oppose Oppose: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much work to do that. I can not even begain to say what would have to happen. SilverPlays97 (Wall) (Contributions) 21:46, August 16, 2013 (UTC)
I hope you know there is a thing called "copy and paste." BlueSpeeder (talk) 21:48, August 16, 2013 (UTC)
Ok let me ask you this. Do you know how to make a website, or anyone who does? There is more to it then just copy-pasting 7,047 pages and growing. SilverPlays97 (Wall) (Contributions) 21:55, August 16, 2013 (UTC)
Oppose Oppose: This happened before a long time ago and I think users weren't able to pay a domain and that's a lot of "copy-pasta"~. And what if users decide that wikia was a better option in the first place? It could turn out the way people didn't truly want it. --DiscoDiva Surnik 21:59, August 16, 2013 (UTC)
Oppose Oppose: Like Silver said, too much work. Not only would we have to copy and paste over 7,000 Pages but we need to make and design the website and get a domain for it. SonicMariosonic15I always race to win!Tails 22:02, August 16, 2013 (UTC)

Oppose. It would take a lot of planning and copying & pasting, and even if we did manage to create domain outside of Wikia, if we need to pay money and rely on our own knowledge of C: Computer language programming (among other types of coding, obviously) to maintain it (which we'll obviously need to do), who among us would be both willing to pay for the site and have the finances to spare, and who among us is truly skilled and knowledgeable about programming to know how to build a website to the specifications we'd require if we want to make ourselves stand out from other Sonic websites (which, last I checked, we do)? I myself have taking some programming when I was in game designing classes in High School, but I can assure you that I most certainly wouldn't have enough knowledge to help do much to maintain our own site domain (since all I was there for, prgramming wise, was making some easy/simple computer games from scratch) -- and I can also assure you that computer programming is no easy thing to learn and memorize. I just don't see how we can make this happen without too much trouble for everyone, so unless someone can come up with an ingenious plan then I'm going to have to keep saying that we should stay with Wikia. No. Wikia is a fantastic service. The current articles on this site would remain here if we moved the Sonic News Network, anyways. We would have to get our name out there all over again. It's a tedious process that isn't worth the time or effort, and will not benefit the Sonic News Network in any form. --Bullet Francisco (talk) Contributions Editcount 22:28, August 16, 2013 (UTC)

Alright. I guess another forum is ready to be closed. BlueSpeeder (talk) 22:29, August 16, 2013 (UTC)

Well, it's not impossible, but it would take a while. MobiusWalker (talk) 16:14, August 19, 2013 (UTC)

Actually, the Sonic News Network is another Sonic fanbase spread across the web on sites like YouTube, Twitter, and FaceBook. We share the same name as this fanbase, but we're totally separate at this point. Moving away from Wikia would cause us to lose our distinction as the "Sonic News Network Wikia". -- Shadowunleashed13 (talk) 19:21, August 19, 2013 (UTC)

I'll be honest, I can see potential with Sonic News Network to be able being self-sufficient Media Wiki site without Wikia format, similar way like Super Mario Wiki and Transformers Wiki, but if only we can grow on larger community and have even more organized activity here. Unfortunately right now, we have also too many projects and other things in our hands to deal with, so the sudden moving may not be the bright idea. There are also some of other issues we have to take care first and some of them have been mentioned here before. But I'm pretty sure, this can be put to discretion of far future, when it is more better time for us. - MarioSonic (talk) 21:22, August 19, 2013 (UTC)

I would prefer this idea to be discarded altogether. Moving to an independently run site will only create even more problems for us to solve. The Wikia format works extremely well for the Sonic News Network, and by moving away, we have limited customization options unless a member of our wiki is willing to hire a professional website designer. I speak from experience, as I currently run various MediaWiki sites, and I can say with the utmost confidence that moving away from Wikia will do more harm to the community than it will good. For starters, this wiki will still exist under the name Sonic News Network. Per the Wikia Terms of Use, we cannot do anything to this wiki that will harm it. This includes, but is not limited to deleting pages, refusing to promote users to administrator status, advertising the "new" Sonic News Network, and vandalizing the site. Although we are technically allowed to import pages and information from this repository, we cannot alter the pages on this website or encourage users to take part in a move. Because any and all instances of advertisement will be removed by either the Volunteer Spam Task Force or Wikia Staff, our loyal readers will still go to this site, and not the new website. Yes, this means that all the hard work that we diligently and conscientiously do at the new website will go to waste because people won't even be going to the new website. In summary:
  • Pros:
    • Independent website (not even a pro considering Wikia's generous hosting far surpasses anything we would be able to create for a wiki as large as this one)
    • We can add some new features (aside from the given MediaWiki extensions, we don't have many options. Like I said, we would need someone to program these features for us; Wikia does this free of charge).
  • Cons:
    • Website is more vulnerable to massive spambot attacks
    • We have to work our way up in the Google rankings
    • This site will remain as a competitor
    • We need experienced people to work on maintenance
    • We will be forced to use the Monobook skin unless we hire someone to create a skin for us
    • No chat feature or the other great features Wikia comes with

TL;DR: Wikia is awesome and we'd be foolish to diverge from their generous hosting. --Bullet Francisco (talk) Contributions Editcount 22:19, August 19, 2013 (UTC)

Ah I see. I'll close this forum up shortly. BlueSpeeder (talk) 22:25, August 19, 2013 (UTC)
