Result: No policy changes, as proposed amendments are already covered under existing guidelines.
A few rules regarding sprite comics (this may also apply to images in general):
  • The sprite comics should not violate the file name policy and the art policy (You can read in Sonic News Network:Policy
  • Do not use or edit any fan-made sprites (made by somebody else) without permission.
  • If permission is confirmed, you may credit the owner.
  • Failure to follow the rules will result in the deletion of the sprites and comics in which the sprites were used.
Crediting

First, it is pointless to use the sprite and credit it without the owner even allowing them to use it under any circumstances.

Second, most users write a long list of names under a section on their user-page which is meant to give credit to the owners of the sprite they use. Sure, they have credited but it's hardly any specific.

I'd like to ask why the names credited are even written on the userpage? Let's say someone uses a fan-made Espio sprite in a comic, instead of having to go to the userpage to assume they credit the owner why not write "Espio sprite belongs to ___" on the description of the comic/blog page? (As in, right below the comic)

Here's another example:

Not this:

  • Person A
  • Person B
  • Person C

But this

  • Espio sprite belongs to person A
  • Mighty sprite belongs to person B
  • Marine sprite belong to person C

While, it is okay to write the credits on the userpage, I think it would be much better if one just credits specifically right under the sprite comic.

That's all. You may express your opinion or ask any question.--SlugDrones • (Contact) 04:17, March 21, 2013 (UTC)

Wow, I'd say it's time to update my credits. I have only one question right now: would you say it's okay to modify official sprites (that's what I was going to do for my FC), as long as I credit the guy who ripped them? Twinkle Snow Unleash Christmas 201313:34, March 21, 2013 (UTC)

If the sprites were official (from games I assume you mean), and you modified them yourself, I am pretty sure there is no reason for you to credit the person who ripped them as they are they official ones; as the sprites were never theirs to begin with. Otherwise we would need to credit a lot of the people who ripped the sprites we have in our image galleries today.  Splash the Otter   C  E  14:30, March 21, 2013 (UTC)

The majority of spriters, who create edited sprites for use typically leave a tag which reads along the lines of "Do not claim as your own and give credit". They typically do not ask permission for their use therefore I do not believe permission is needed to use these sprites as the creator has acknowledged that permission is not needed. I would have even made a policy for editing official artwork but considering how popular it is and the fact that SEGA or Sonic Team has never brought it up as an issue, I suppose it's okay for you to edit sprites and images made officially. It does however sound wrong to me, but it's just an opinion. Just don't edit any fan-made sprites.--SlugDrones • (Contact) 07:48, March 22, 2013 (UTC)

I'm in concurrence, except I don't find official image editing wrong. In addition, if there was a policy that prohibited editing official artwork, almost every fan-made sprite - and every iota of their appearances - that ever existed on this website would have to go, so that's a bad move. Editing fan-made sprites, particularly without permission from the original artists, I can see the detriment in that. That's just not right. Actually, Sonic Team MADE all Sprites. There are just artists or, people, or the same thang, but they just "rip" them off games. They acknowledge Sonic Team, of course. But shouldn't we just copyright Sonic Team for all of them? MintsyWinterBlue (talk) (contributions) 18:59, March 22, 2013 (UTC)

I don't think there's anything wrong with editing fan-made sprites, the rules are different with sprites in that people who upload then do so with the intent that people use them. Myself 123 22:31, March 22, 2013 (UTC)

Myself - I disagree with your statement. It's certainly not right to use or edit someone else's work. People are very protective of their work therefore brings up an issue.--SlugDrones • (Contact) 05:29, March 23, 2013 (UTC)
Myself, if the artist has publically given permission for free use of their work, that's fine. The uploader and poster must assert that they have permission to use. If this cannot be provided, then we must assume that the images have been used without permission. -- Supermorff (talk) 09:29, March 23, 2013 (UTC)

Can we close this discussion since the proposed rules are already covered by our general image policy? -- Supermorff (talk) 12:56, April 8, 2013 (UTC)

Of course you can, I don't think there's anything else that needs to be said. We have too many SDs open right now anyway. THE REFLEX dancing on the valentine 13:28, April 8, 2013 (UTC)
