The Forty Fathom Freedom Fighters is a group that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. They are a group of aquatic Freedom Fighters working under the Plankton Intelligence Agency (P.I.A.) to keep the seas clean from the tyranny of Dr. Ivo Robotnik and, later, Dr. Eggman.[1]

The group was first discovered by Knothole Freedom Fighter agent, Miles "Tails" Prower, while he was on a mission to Downunda. The group has have faced off against Octobot on numerous occasions and were later responsible for stopping the misfit Badniks from turning Pseudo-Sonic into an ultimate weapon.

The Forty Fathom Freedom Fighters charging at Octobot, from Tails #1.

When Tails was captured by Octobot, the robot nearly drowned him. However, the Forty Fathom Freedom Fighters managed to arrive just in time to save Tails' life and force Octobot to flee. From there, Fluke the Blue Whale brought Tails to the continent of Downunda as his Sea Fox submarine was damaged by Octobot. Later, when Tails wished to return to Knothole, the Forty Fathom Freedom Fighters presented him with the repaired Sea Fox, enabling Tails to return home.[2][3][4]

Eel of Fortune[]

Sometime later, the Forty Fathom Freedom Fighters, save for Fluke, who was migrating at the time, found themselves facing off against Eel Capone, who had ousted Octobot and taken over a large section of the sea. Bottlenose managed to overpower Eel Capone through his "Finja" training, and freedom was restored to the seas.[5]

The Island of Misfit Badniks[]

A couple years later, the Forty Fathom Freedom Fighters discovered the sunken Island of Misfit Badniks, where the various surviving Badnik robots were attempting to rebuild Pseudo-Sonic after his latest confrontation with Sonic the Hedgehog. The group managed to destroy most of the Badniks, though Pseudo-Sonic managed to overwhelm them. Fluke was able to flatten Pseudo-Sonic, and cleaned up the destroyed Badniks, compacting them into a cube.[6]

Trivia[]

  • The Forty Fathom Freedom Fighters are amongst the few Mobians introduced in the old continuity who possess few anthropomorphic qualities other than the ability to speak. Combined with the quintet falling outside the legally permissible pool of Sega, DIC and Ian Flynn staff characters, this design complication may have played a role in the Forty Fathom Freedom Fighters not returning in the post Worlds Collide reality, which introduced anthropomorphic undersea Mobians as the inhabitants of Meropis.
