Fly the Bat, also known as Fly the Vampire or Vampire Bat, is an anthropomorphic bat character who was set to appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He was slated for debut in Sonic Adventure before being cut.[1]

Concept and creation[]

During early development of Sonic Adventure, Satoshi Okano created Fly the Bat, along with Spider-Girl, as potential characters to be featured the game. Fly in particular was possibly considered to be one of the playable characters in the game[2], although he was ultimately scrapped out of concerns that his pig-nosed design would prove too scary to children.[3]

Fly the Bat was also seemingly heavily inspired by Flyhigh, a character from the Super Nintendo videogame Astro Go! Go!, who was also created by Satoshi Okano.[4]
