The Fly Thorn 03[note 1] is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, sea-urchin-based Badnik created by Dr. Eggman, as well as a variant of the Fly Thorn.

Appearance[]

Like the Fly Thorn before it, the Fly Thorn 03 is based on a sea urchin, with these Badniks having a round red body with a horizontal gray stripe across the middle of their body, as well as several spikes protruding from their bodies.

Overview[]

In Sonic Superstars, the Fly Thorn 03s make their only appearance in Lagoon City Zone Act 2. In gameplay, the Fly Thorn 03s float still in their position underwater until they spot the player, at which point they will show a surprised expression and give chase. Due to the spikes sticking out from all sides of the Fly Thorn 03, the player must avoid these Badniks by jumping over them rather than attempting to destroy them. While it is normally impossible to destroy the Fly Thorn 03 with regular attacks, it is still possible for the player to destroy these Badniks by either using ranged attacks (such as Amy's various Hammer Attacks) or Spin Attacking them while having invincibility frames. Additionally, if the Fly Thorn 03s collide the each other, they will destroy themselves and release their Animals in the process (though the player does not receive any points when this happens). Like with most Badniks in the game, the Fly Thorn 03 will release their Animal upon destruction, as well as awarding the player 100 points if they manage to destroy them.

Powers and abilities[]

The Fly Thorn 03s are very well-protected, and cannot be harmed conventionally, as their spikes protect them from being destroyed by most standard attacks such as a Spin Jump (which can normally destroy most other Badniks). Additionally, the spikes on a Fly Thorn 03's body are so strong that they are even capable of destroying themselves.

Notes[]

  1. While not listed in any instruction manuals, the internal files of Sonic Superstars refer to this enemy as "FlyThorn03."
