The Fly Thorn[note 1] (ウニメカ[1] Unimeka?, lit. "Sea Urchin Mecha") is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, sea urchin-based Badnik created by Dr. Eggman.

Appearance[]

The Fly Thorn is based on a sea urchin, similar to the Orbinaut series. These Badniks have a spherical, purple body with wide eyes and retractable gray spikes.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Speed Simulator[]

Sonic Superstars[]

In Sonic Superstars, the Fly Thorns appear as enemies frequently throughout the game, being found in Bridge Island Zone, Speed Jungle Zone, Sky Temple Zone, Lagoon City Zone, Cyber Station Zone, and Frozen Base Zone. In gameplay, the Fly Thorns can always be found floating gently in place. They begin with their spikes retracted, during which the player has ample time to destroy them; but after several seconds they will extend their spikes, making them temporarily invulnerable and damaging the player upon contact. Like most Badniks in the game, the Fly Thorn will release their Animal and award the player 100 points upon destruction.

Powers and abilities[]

Fly Thorns are capable of levitation, though their main skill lies in their spike protrusion, as they can have all their spikes hidden inside their bodies. While Fly Thorns can be harmless at first, they will reveal their spikes after shaking violently, which can cause damage to their foes if they collide with them.

Trivia[]

  • Despite being made to debut in Sonic Superstars, the Fly Thorns appeared in Sonic Speed Simulator prior to their debut in Sonic Superstars.
  • Fly Thorns share similarities with the Orbinaut series of Badniks, in particular their sea urchin inspiration, levitation ability, and use of spikes as their main offense. Coincidentally, Uni Unis also appear in Sonic Superstars as well.
